I didn’t understand why he’d want to get married. Maybe he was in love. I wasn’t sure I hadn’t met his fiancé yet. They’d only been dating a year, and things had moved quickly.

I put Mitchell from my mind as I sipped my drink, scanning the crowd for any threat. That’s when I saw her.

My hand stilled with the glass to my lips. The rest of the ballroom faded away. And my heart literally skipped a beat.

She was a goddess with fiery red hair cascading down her back. Her luscious curves were wrapped in a green dress that dipped low, displaying a lot of creamy skin before it came to rest only centimeters above her ass.

And fuck, what an ass. Perfectly plump and round, like it was made to be grabbed as I sank my cock into her beautiful body.

She glanced over her shoulder, sensing my gaze, and I finally saw her face. She didn’t have the hollow cheeks that some men thought were attractive. No, her face was heart-shaped.

Her eyes were a deep royal blue as she searched the room. They were wide and expressive. Even from this distance, I could read them.

She was apprehensive, maybe even fearful, as she felt my gaze. Her lips were a deep red that I didn’t think was lipstick.

A jolt went through my body as I stared at her. Every nerve ending coming alive, focusing and realigning on her.

Mine.

It was my only thought. I knew she was mine. The same way I knew, the tides moved with the moon, and birds always flew south.

My gut tightened as I left my drink on the railing and made my way back down the stairs. I barely noticed the crowd as I pushed through them, my gaze never leaving her.

She was a beautiful sunflower amongst the weeds. I felt the overwhelming urge to protect her. To make sure the weeds didn’t choke the life from her. But also to hide her from the sun because her beauty was mine alone to possess.

“Would you like to dance?” Her perfect lips parted on a gasp as she turned to face me. My dick went hard in an instant when I saw a tiny freckle on the bow of her lip. I wanted to press a kiss directly to it.

“I don’t know. Are you a good dancer?” Her smile lit up the room. It warmed my chest.

“I think so.” I fell more in love with her by the second. With the fire hidden behind her sweetness.

“Men always do.” She laughed, and the sound twinkled. Full of lightness.

“I can give references.” I couldn’t help my answering smile. “Come on, what do you have to lose?”

“There’s always something to lose.” Those deep blue eyes raked over me, and I felt it like a physical touch. Like she was branding me. And I was more than willing to take her mark on my body. “But sure, why not?”

I grasped her hand in mine. Her skin was as soft as it looked. Her voice as sweet as I’d imagined.

I never planned on getting married. Why would I want to bring a woman or children into this world? But when I looked at her, I saw my future.

I saw mornings waking up to her face. Days kissing that freckle on her lip. Nights rocking babies with her red hair. I saw it all in that instant.

We made conversation as we danced. Our bodies moving in sync like we’d been doing it for years. Time fades memories, and now all I remember is what I felt. This overwhelming sense that I knew her. That she was meant to be someone important to me.

She was everything I dreamed of and more. I spent long minutes talking to her. Taking in her voice. Her laugh. Her scent; roses.

I plotted our future. It would be full of happiness. Babies. Love.

But that future disappeared like the song we’d danced to, making you wonder if they were ever really yours in the first place.

“Vander.” My mother’s voice cut through my euphoria like a knife to the heart. “I see you’ve met Mitchell’s fiancé.”
