I couldn’t take my eyes off his as I reached up. His sweat slid along my fingers as I grabbed his neck and pulled. His skin was hot, heating me down to my toes and between my legs.

“No.” I gasped.

His hands cupped my cheeks as he closed the distance until my breasts smashed into his chest. Until not a single inch of us wasn’t touching. My body electrified with the energy he gave off.

His rage and protectiveness flowed through my blood. Made my cloudy mind dizzier. His forehead was warm against mine as he pressed them together.

His evergreen eyes bore into me. I watched as they flicked to my mouth again. And mine did the same. They traced over his full lips.

We were so close our breath mixed. Close enough to be kissing within a span of one of those breaths.

I could practically taste the whiskey on him. And something else. That unknown something that I yearned for.

My heart pounded in my chest. My body was like a live wire waiting for something to set it on fire. His lips. His mouth. His hands. One movement and I would be ablaze.

I must have made a sound. A whimper that he thought was distress. Because instead of kissing me, he pulled back.

My hands fell to my sides in disappointment. His thumb swept along my cheek once more before they disappeared, too.

Losing him felt like a gaping hole. It carved out my insides until I was empty again.

“Keep having fun, Sunflower.” His voice was rough and low, barely carrying over the music. I felt it more than heard it. “You’re safe.”

I didn’t know if it was the burst of anticipation that he’d shattered. Or the fight. Or the night, but I suddenly felt deflated.

“Actually, I’m ready to go.”

He tilted his head, examining me. “Not because of that asshole?”

“No. I’m just tired.” I smiled, so he wouldn’t feel bad. It wasn’t his fault that I’d gotten drunk, and an idiot had taken that as an invitation to touch me. “But I had fun.” And I did. I liked this feeling of lightness in my chest. This ability to let my guard down. “I need to say goodbye to the girls.”

He nodded, and I turned, pushing back through the crowd to find Tessa and Kincaid. They were where I’d left them. A look of concern on their faces, like they’d seen the fight.

“Hey, we’re leaving,” I called before pulling Kincaid in for a hug.

“Be safe.” She winked.

Confused, I moved to hug Tessa. “Yes, please go home and take care of that.”

My head jerked back. “Take care of what?”

“The sexual tension that’s choking everyone in this room.”

“No, that’s not—.”

But she cut me off. “Girl, he looks like he wants to eat you up, and I suggest you let him.”

I threw my head back and laughed. The champagne bubbled up in my veins, pushing away any lingering fear. Jesus, I loved having friends again.

But as Vander placed a hand on my back, leading me to the limo, I wondered if she was right. The alcohol gave me just enough courage to find out.

Vander

Grace stumbled on the completely smooth sidewalk. I wrapped an arm around her waist as she laughed. A smile pulled on my lips as I helped her maneuver past the crowd and into the limo. A mist shined in the streetlights and clung to her red hair.

She giggled as she plopped onto the seat. I was happy that the little incident hadn’t ruined her night. I was worried she would be afraid of that guy. Even more nervous, she’d fear me.
