“They won’t touch you.” I pressed my staff under the table, flipping it over. It crashed to the ground. Matt crawled away at the last second. The fear in his eyes satisfied something deep inside me. “You’re mine.”

There was no rush of adrenaline. No spike in my blood pressure as I advanced on him. All I felt was rightness. Calm. Knowing I was getting him back for yelling at my Songbird. For making her feel bad after she’d helped him.

I slammed the wood down on his knee, loving the sound of his shout. It felt like vindication. Like vengeance.

“Fuck you.” He said as he grabbed the staff, trying to rip it from my hands. But his broken fingers hindered him. “You’re weak. You’re only able to hurt me because you have a weapon.”

A laugh rumbled up my chest as I yanked it from his grasp. Stepping back, I kicked a hammer towards him. A knife. The brass knuckles. All the various tools that had fallen on the floor.

“Here.” My head tilted. I loved the horror in his eyes that my eerie gaze caused. “Take your pick.”

He grabbed a baseball bat. Pushing to his feet, he ran at me. I sidestepped, tripping him with the staff. The bat clattered to the ground, but it was too late to stop his face from smashing into the concrete.

Blood splashed on the gray floors. The sight of it relieved some of the tension in my chest. I brought the wood down on his spine. His shouts of pain soothed me as I hit him again and again. Sweat slid along my skin. My breathing grew heavy. My fingers turned numb as I gripped the weapon.

“Stop! Please.”

Using the staff, I pushed him to his back. He coughed as more red, viscous liquid poured from his broken nose. “You’re begging me for mercy?”

“Yes, please.” He was exactly what I’d always assumed. A rabid dog. All bark, no bite. Someone who spoke down to others to hide their own failings.

“I thought I was pathetic.” I smacked the weapon on his thighs and he screamed.

“Weak.” His knees cracked.

“A freak.” His ankle splintered. “But you couldn’t get in a single hit.”

I stood again, letting him cry on the floor and think about how someone like me could’ve beaten him. I righted the table, setting the staff down with a soft click. Showing the weapon the respect it deserved.

Angelo laughed as Matt struggled to breathe. “You made a mistake underestimating him.”

“He trained beside us,” Cole said. “He was better at it too, but he didn’t have the anger for it.”

“Guess you shouldn’t have pissed him off.”

They understood and now others would, too.

Matt flinched as I walked back towards him. I didn’t spare him a glance as I pulled down my sleeves, but my voice was razor sharp. “Never disrespect her again, or you’ll have more than a few broken bones. I trust you’ll let everyone else know.”

It might be wrong. All kinds of fucked up. But this was how it was done in our world. No one would touch her now. No one would dare to speak a harsh word to her.

I’d just staked a claim on my Songbird.

Iexhaled in a huff as I yanked the covers down. A second later, goosebumps broke out along my skin from the cool air. Frustration coated my chest as I jerked the blankets up again.

Blowing out a slow breath, I rolled to my stomach. I tried to push my racing thoughts from my head so I could sleep. But they kept spinning in circles.

Nathan and his lean, muscular body.

Who was after me? And why?

Nathan and his serene blue eyes.

Was I safe here?
