“Because the dark elves are on their way.”

SIERRA

Istare at Zephiro, terrified. Just moments ago, we were about to share something so tender. I was going to show him my heart. It was all going so perfectly.

I wish I could go back to that moment before we got interrupted. I’ll never get that back.

Zephiro turns to me, eyes wild. He’s already moving into the bedroom again, looking around. I have no idea what he’s looking for.

“I’m so sorry,” he says.

“What is happening?”

“Gradius is a part of the tribe. He’s an asshole, but he was right. We really do have to get out of here.”

“What’s going on, Zephiro? I don’t understand.”

He sits on the edge of the bed, taking my hands in his own.

“We’re not safe here anymore. The dark elves that owned you before I took you… They want you back. I didn’t know they were so attached to you. I didn’t realize the high noble elf’s obsession with you.”

“The one they were taking me to that night…” I trail off. Elijayur.

“Yes. When your body wasn’t recovered, he must have sent his men out to search for you, and they must have been searching all this time. It’s a wonder they didn’t find you here yet. We have to leave tonight.”

I stare at him, shocked beyond belief. How can we just leave here? This is his home, and it was just starting to become mine.

“I thought we were safe here. Is it possible they’ll never find us?”

“No. They’re too close. Gradius storming in here tonight is evidence of that. The elves must already be disturbing the nearby villages.”

I start crying, unable to help myself.

“Fuck,” he swears. “This is all my fault. I should have made sure that every single one of those elves involved with you was dead. I should have killed them all.”

He stands up, pacing back and forth while muttering to himself.

“It’s not your fault, it’s mine,” I sob.

He stops his pacing, sitting on the bed next to me and pulling me close.

“It’s never your fault. You did nothing wrong.”

“Yes I did, I got you into this mess. Now you’re in danger because of me.”

“Don’t you see it? I got myself into this the moment I took you. I just underestimated how much those elves valued you. And exactly how far they would go to get you back. But it’s nothing I can’t handle.”

Fear settles into every crevice of my mind, consuming me. I can’t do this. I can’t go back to those elves.

“Please don’t let them find me,” I sob.

“They will never find you, my love.”

“What if they do?”

“They won’t. But if they do find us, I will kill every last one of them. They won’t get their hands on you.”
