Sierra sets Lucy down, too, and we leave Zkovia to watch the children, getting them ready for their life ceremony.

Sierra takes my hand, and we sit together quietly, just happy to get a moment to ourselves.

She rests her head on my chest, watching the cubs frolic.

“My dream was just like this,” she says absentmindedly.

“Oh,” I say. “Your dream?”

“The premonition I saw after they were born?”

I smile dreamily. “Exactly like this?”

“Not exactly,” she says. “Zkovia wasn’t here, and they were several years older.”

I move in, and I peck her on the cheek.

We enjoy the calm silence as Zkovia gathers them together, standing them on the altar.

“We come to the cradle to thank the maiden,” Zkovia says, struggling to keep Lucy, Brennik, and Sapphus from wandering away. “Through mercy, she has allowed life to… Lucy, stop hitting your brothers.”

Sierra and I both laugh.

Maybe someday, those three will get along. But right now, Zkovia definitely has his hands full.

I run my claws through Sierra’s hair, remembering to be gentle so that I don’t graze her scalp.

“I love you, you know. You’re the best father and mate than I could have hoped for.” Her hypnotizing blue eyes are almost incapacitating.

“I love you, too,” I say. “Always have, always will.”

She smiles at me, resting her head on my shoulder now.

It appears that Zkovia has wrapped up the ceremony. He’s heading our way with the children.

“There’s one thing I’ve always wondered, though,” she says. “What’s going on with the sun down here?”

I stare up at the light, which grants us so many blessings. “Some say it’s the light of the earth maiden, left to burn in her absence,” I say. “But me? I try not to think about it too much.”

She embraces me tightly, and I think about how lucky I am.
