“She turned you down?” Her eyes light up with interest.
I lean back in my seat and look straight at her. “She did.”
“Hmm… try harder… or maybe she doesn’t like you.”
“She does.”
“How do you know?”
“I know,” I say quietly.
“Change the narrative. Change what people say about you. Show her the person you want to be with her, Valen. Who do you want to be when she looks at you? The sex addict with a temper, or the perfect guy in her eyes.”
“How?”
“Talk to your friends.” She means to talk to Reid, Dravin, and Draven. I want to laugh and throw up. Imagine me writing love letters.
“Valen?”
I blink twice. “Yes?”
“If you want to show her and are really interested in this girl, find out what she likes without talking about sex. Learn to control your impulsivity. I think this will be good for you. I like this girl already.”
“Because she turned me down?”
She uncrosses her legs and smiles. “Especially because she turned you down. Have you used drugs?”
“No.”
She looks up, writing in my chart. “Last time?”
“Party about six months ago.”
“The one where you were trying to forget...”
“Yes.”
“You’re a smart young man,” she continues, “very smart. Genius even. I’m surprised you haven’t graduated early.” She pauses for a moment, like she just realized something. “You…”
“Waited,” I finish for her.
“For her.”
“I did,” I admit. “I waited for her.”
“Why?”
“It’s what I’m trying to figure out.”
Adam: I sent you two tickets in case you want to invite a friend. I can’t wait to see you there.
He sent me two tickets to see if I made a friend or had a boyfriend. I look up when I hear Ariel help a customer out the door.
He turns around, and our eyes meet. “Hey, Ariel?”
“Is everything okay?”
