“Want to what?” I am confused.

“I want to try. I want to be the one to take you to the dark sky and burn with the stars, Melody. I want to be that.”

“So you don’t want to have sex?” I’m confused.

“Right now, my body says... yes. But my heart says it’s not ready, Melody.” He looks away. “If you don’t like me, I understand. I’ll leave you alone. You can still go to school, and I’ll look after you. I’ll do that because I promised your brother I would, and I don’t want to hurt you. I want…”

“Does he know?”

I do like him. I think he’s hot, scary, and dangerous. I wouldn’t know where to begin with someone like him. I don't know how far I can go without losing what’s left of myself completely.

“Your brother doesn’t know how I feel about you, Melody. I’m not going to lie. I’m not a good guy. I’ve done things I’m not proud of, but I want you.” He gestures back and forth between us. “I want to explore whatever this is.”

I don’t know what to say. Valen Vikiar wants to date me. A guy who every girl on and off campus wants. A guy who every girl on campus has fucked. How do I compete with that?

I look away. “I didn’t think I was someone you found attractive,” I stammer. “I’m nothing…”

“You’re gorgeous, Melody.” He closes his eyes like he’s in pain. “I want to show you, but... then you wouldn’t believe me. It will put things in your mind you’re not sure of, and when it happens, I want you to trust me. I want you to…”

“I don’t know if I could, Valen. I trusted someone with my body, and they betrayed me in the worst way. I’m no good for anyone.”

“He cheated because he’s an idiot. I told him to stay away from you.” He smiles. “He was jealous when he saw you with Azriel.”

“They wanted to beat him up.”

“Azriel would have handled it.”

“Azriel would have handled it,” I mock.

“My brother is nice, but again, like I said, he can defend himself. What kind of brother do you think I am?”

“I don’t know because I don’t know you.”

“Get to know me.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Will you take our offer to stay here instead of the trailer?”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Valen.” I look around the room, taking in the comfort and space compared to the trailer. What if he heard me having a nightmare or changed his mind and kicked me out?”

“I see the wheels turning in that pretty head of yours. Azriel is here, and so is Mrs. Mallory. You’ll love her. It’s safer. I don’t like you staying in the trailer by yourself.”

“What would my brother say if he found out?”

“You’re renting a room. He doesn’t know about Azriel.”

“Who does?”

“Alaric. Only the sons of Kenyan and the founding fathers of the school know about Azriel.”

“Jess?”

I regret saying her name as soon as it slipped out. I don’t know why I mentioned her. It’s the second time I've done it, but they have history.

“No.” The curve of his mouth turns into a side grin. My cheeks heat. He knows I’m jealous. “I don’t love Jess, Melody. Yes, I slept with her, but I was confused about my feelings for her. It’s one of the reasons I’m holding back because I want more with you.”

“I don’t trust you,” I admit. More to myself than to him.
