“Oh, I wasn’t.”

He cocks his head. “Did you come here to see me?”

“I came to eat lunch,” I correct.

He looks at the table and then at me. “Where’s your food?”

“I haven’t bought any yet.”

“When are you planning to?”

“I can’t sit here?” I say carefully.

“I never said that, but you’re sitting in front of me, staring at nothing with no lunch, waiting for him to show up.” He leans slightly over the table and lowers his voice. “It’s obvious you like him.”

“I don’t…”

“You have nothing to worry about. He’s into you,” he says proudly.

“Did he say that?”

“I’m not at liberty to discuss.” He winks. “All I’m going to say is that he’s into you.”

“How’s that?”

“What did he tell you?”

He leans forward again. “Ask him yourself.”

The wind picks up like nature senses his dark presence. I follow Garret’s line of sight and see Valen walking from building two this way. The conversation stops when he approaches. They begin again when he passes.

He’s wearing ripped black jeans and a charcoal gray hoodie, a contrast to the ink on his neck. One sleeve rolled up, revealing a tattooed forearm lightly veined. When he reaches the side of the bench where I’m sitting, he straddles it, facing me. My cheeks blush shamelessly, trying not to look between his legs. I could smell the scent on his skin. Citrus and cedar. He looks like a famous rock star. Dark and sexy.

“How was class?” he asks, ignoring everyone else seated at the table.

“Humdrum.”

“Algebra, right?”

He knows my schedule. I wonder what else he knows.

“Yes.”

“You find it monotonous because it’s easy.”

“Are you sure it’s not because I find it hard?”

“You’re perspicacious. I find that hard to believe.”

If he only knew, I wouldn't. If I was, I wouldn’t be here.

“I’m not.”

“The fact that you know what that word means...” We both look great. He raises his eyebrows. “What?” His eyes shift to Valen. “I’ve never heard you talk to a girl like that. You always tone down the fact that you’re smart. Genius even.”

“I’m not,” Valen says. “I’m no different from any other student here.”

Garret snorts. “Yeah, tell that to your GPA or, better yet, IQ test.”
