He is a sex addict, Melody. You know exactly why he left.

Tuesday

Valen: Can we talk?

Wednesday

Valen: I’m sorry about the other day.

Thursday

Valen: Will you answer me?

Valen: I went by your place, but you weren’t there.

Friday

Valen: Why did you miss class?

Valen: Melody, please talk to me.

Valen: I can explain. She doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s not what you think.

“Are you going to answer? It’s been going off again.”

I grab my phone from under the counter by the register, open the messaging app, and block his number.

I place the phone back and look up. “Done.”

“You want to talk about it?”

“No, Azriel. I don’t,” I say dryly.

I hate being standoffish with Azriel. It isn’t his fault that his brother is an asshole. Valen was right about one thing: I am astute and keen. I knew the type of guy he was when I first laid eyes on him.

He didn’t hide it, but, like always, I didn’t listen to my instincts. I didn’t listen to my brother.

Rose laid it all out that day at the bar about him. She didn’t know me, and she had no reason to lie about the things she said about him. About Melissa. But I thought I was different. He knew what strings to play to get me to fall for the things he said. It didn’t take much for me to take my clothes off like a desperate idiot in his pool. I could never hold a guy’s attention.

I’m notthatgirl. It’s why I’m fucked up. I can’t remember.

“Melody?”

“Yes, Azriel.”

“Are you okay?” he asks in a soft voice.

“I’m fine,” I quip.

“Are you sure you want to come back, Melody?” Dorothy asks. “I mean, I love that you want to work for me, and you know I need the help, but...”

“Please, I can’t work there. It’s…” I trail off.

Dorothy isn’t stupid. She knows I’m trying to come back because of Valen. I can’t see the tortured look in Azriel’s face anymore, and I hate treating him the way I have. He doesn’t deserve it, but I can’t be around him. He’s going to expect me to talk about what is bothering me at some point, and I can’t.

“Alright,” she relents. “Come back. You are currently my best server, and good help is hard to find. But I’m warning you, Melody,” she says in a serious tone, “he will show up. Running from him will make him chase you harder.”

She means Valen.
