I whirl around, and Valen stands in the middle of the sidewalk with his hands in his pockets.

“It looked like you were busy with your game.”

He steps closer. “I would have stopped. What were you talking to Melissa about?”

“Worried that I’ll cause a rift between you and your girl?”

He makes a face like he just tasted sour milk. “Girl?”

“Yeah, Melissa.”

“What about her?”

“She told me you two have a thing. A promise. I get it. It makes sense. The other day at the quad. The way she showed up just now.”

His jaw clenches. “What else did she tell you?”

“That you two have an understanding. It’s college, right? You’re both having fun, but once it’s all over...

“Stay away from her. She’s…”

“Why?” I say sarcastically. “Because that would make you a liar? A player?” I scoff. “Look, I think it’s best we stay away from each other.”

I turn around, but he grips my arm, holding me back. I look down at his hand, then at him. “I’m not a liar. Everything I said and did was real.”

I pull my arm free. “I’m not saying that it wasn’t. I just know that it’s just your way of hooking up with a girl you haven’t fucked.” He flinches like I’ve slapped him. “Isn’t that what you want? To fuck. Scratch that underlying urge you have lodged in your mind. The one that doesn’t mean anything.”

“What the fuck did Melissa tell you? Whatever she said, she’s lying. She’s manipulative…”

I shake my head. “So you haven’t fucked almost every girl on campus?”

“Have we?”

“But isn’t that why you’re here? Because you want to? Isn’t that what you’ve been trying to do? At the pool? In your house? Right now?”

His chest is rising and falling. I watch his throat as he swallows. Melissa may be a vindictive territorial bitch who likes to play games, but she wasn’t wrong about some of the things she said.

“What am I?” I press. “Number…eight hundred and fifty-three?”

“I…”

“You know what?” I walk backward. “Don’t answer that. You wouldn’t be the first asshole to use me for their sick games.”

I turn around and hurry to my car because I don’t want him to see how much it hurts me that he’s no different from Zack and the assholes who hurt me.

Valen: Follow her.

I walk into Babylon and scan the bar until my eyes land on Melissa, who is chatting up some girl.

I walk through the throng of people with beers and mixed drinks in their hands until I reach her, trying not to throttle her in front of everyone.

“We need to talk,” I say, gripping her by the arm.

“Valen,” she protests. Her eyes are wide. “What?”

I push her against the wall in a dark corner. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”

Her mouth opens and stays stuck for a split second before forming a wicked smile. “So you do like her. How cute.”
