“I want your fear,” he says.

All I can think about is the fact that sometimes rebirth requires the death of the soul.

“Is that all?”

“I want your consent. I won’t ask for it again once you agree.”

“Condoms.”

He grins. “Condoms,” he mocks. “I don’t have anything, but if it’s pregnancy you’re worried about...”

“It’s not that. It’s…”

“You think I’ll sleep around.”

“You don’t owe me.”

“I’m not going to fuck anyone else, and I’ll give you peace of mind.”

I drag my hands away from him reluctantly. “Like?”

He laces his fingers with mine. “Proof that I’m clean, and I need you to know that I have a dirty appetite, Melody. Right now, I’m like a caged animal.”

“I’m your Prey, right?”

He smiles, but his eyes tell me he’s surprised that I know that term and what it means.

“Since you set foot in Kenyan. I marked you. You’re mine.”

“I choose until you get bored.”

“Who said I was bored?”

Let the games begin.

He removes his hand from my throat and tilts my chin up. The clouds moving over the moon cause the light to make his face appear sinister.

“I’m going to break you, Melody. I’m going to take everything inside you, including your breath, away. I’m going to be your new nightmare.”

My fingers play with the band of his sweatpants, feeling his warm, smooth skin underneath.

“Why?”

“I’ve been waiting for you, Melody. When we first saw each other, there was nothing to say. Our eyes meeting was just enough.” He takes my hand so I can feel his hard stomach. The deep grooves that make up his ab muscles. “You’re not in high school anymore. You’re not underage, but I promised your brother I wouldn’t touch you.” He smiles and lowers his voice, placing his lips over the lobe of my ear. “I lied.” Sharp tingles slide down my neck.

I take the last step and turn right down the hallway, not wanting to miss out on getting something to eat. I end up at the vending machine, scanning the choices.

“Hey?”

Jeremy walks up. I know what he wants. For me to answer his calls. After my little agreement with Valen last night, he followed me home to make sure I was safe. Jeremy called me four times and left three text messages. It was a little excessive, but I did leave after Kenyan won and didn’t say goodbye.

“Hey,” I say, still looking at the chocolate chip cookies.

“I was worried about you last night. I didn’t hear from you, and you left after.”

I press D9 while watching the machine dispense the pack of cookies. “I had to work." I push the black opener and grab my cookies. By the time you called, it was late,” I say, giving him a weak smile. “Sorry.”

He shifts on his feet. “That’s okay. I was worried. You know, it’s not safe out there.”
