“She was looking for you. Well, the other part of her was. Now that I know the truth.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. How could I?”

“I get it. I’m not upset, but you could have told me you loved her. It would have all made sense.”

“No one knows except you.”

“It means a lot, brother. You trust me enough to tell me something that is not easy to admit.” He smiles. “I loved that she was doing things like before.”

“You mean you got her to watch scary movies again?”

“Hell, yeah. She loves the scary ones. She likes M&Ms in her popcorn, and I made sure to buy all her favorites. I want her to think it was all my idea.”

I shake my head. “You’re making me jealous.”

“Do you think she will be mad if I tell her that I’ve seen the same movies with her before? I mean…” He pauses. “You know what I mean.”

“I want to tell you something important.” He looks up. “I have never cheated on Melody.”

“Does she know that?”

“I think part of her does. The deep parts, the one that counts, but there is something else I need to tell you. Something no one knows. Not yet.”

He gives me his full attention, and I begin.

My eyes flutter open, and I yawn. It feels like I’m floating on a cloud. My throat is a bit sore, and my tongue is stuck on the roof of my mouth, but something is different. My back doesn’t hurt, and I’m not in the trailer. I take a deep breath. The familiar smell of citrus and cedar.

I look to my right, to my left, and then at the ceiling. Where am I?

I sit up and notice the expensive furniture. The huge bed I’m in.

I lift the comforter, and I’m naked. My hand snags on a thread from the sheet, and I see a huge diamond ring on my finger. I extend my fingers and see the way the stone glitters in the light coming in from the huge bedroom window.

I glance at the nightstand and notice the picture frame of Valen and me. I don’t remember when it was taken. I open the drawer and find two cell phones on a wireless charger. I pick up my phone, then the other. I look at the late-model cell phone, guess the code, and it unlocks.

I notice it mirrors my phone, except there are messages from my sister Madison from yesterday asking how I’m doing. Messages I don’t remember sending.

I scroll to Valen’s name and open the thread messages.

Valen: You look beautiful when I’m inside you.

Valen: I love the color of your hair when the sun rises in the morning. I think it’s one of my favorite things when I wake up next to you. I hate that there are times when you forget how I feel about you. How do I feel about us?

Melody: I could never forget you. I could never forget us.

Valen: You’re my favorite part of my day, Melody. Don’t forget to come home to me.

Melody: Always.

The bedroom door opens.

“You’re awake.”

“Veronica?”

“Of course, it’s me.” She takes a seat on the bed. “Who did you think would barge in on you and not care if you’re naked?”

I remove the sheet and cover myself. “How did I get here?”
