He’s already facing away from me, walking back to the sofa, but I’m not done.

“And if I don’t want that?” I call out, my hands tightening into fists.

The sick smile he shows me as he glances back brings a chill down my spine. “Then you can be the slave at my feet.”

“I hate you.” My trembling voice threatens to break. “So, what? Elliot is the head of the Kings now?”

“Elliot is nicely doing what he’s told. The man cares about you. All I had to do was pay him a visit to tell him your life is at risk if he doesn’t follow orders. Why do you think he didn’t try anything today?”

“But you won’t kill me.” I narrow my gaze at him. “You prefer to see me suffer, don’t you?” I don’t know why I sound so petty. Maybe because his little manipulating schemes are getting to my head.

“He doesn’t need to know that. What he needs to do is take hold of your crew, accept the deal—which he will because it brings him closer to me and so closer to you—and just keep on living his little life as a gangster. Really, I’m being fair to everyone here. I don’t know why you’re making such a big deal out of it.”

“Because you took my freedom!” My scream bounces against the walls, resonating in the room for a few seconds. My throat hurts from everything it took out of me.

He’s doing it again, making the walls close in on me by forcing me to acknowledge my situation.

He leans back in his seat, relaxing against the cushions of the sofa. He wipes dry blood off his cheek from earlier, looking at it with a sick satisfaction I don’t even think he realizes himself.

Tilting his head to the side, his gaze burns bright with embers of satisfaction. “Well, so did you, my darling wife. I thought we had an understanding about that.”

“Nate,” I rasp. “I can’t do this. Let me go.”

The veil of irritation falls over him again. He’s unimpressed. “I think seeing your crew today has given you the wrong idea. You are still here. You are still mine. There’s no changing that.”

“Please,” I whisper desperately. “You have to let me go.”

“Ah, despair.” Pride shines in his eyes at figuring out how I feel.

And instead of fighting him with violence, I give up. Maybe he’s right, maybe seeing Ethan and Elliot did something to me. Maybe seeing Jade and the way she looks up to me brought out the distress from this situation.

He’s taking everything from me. The thought of being able to handle him if I could still lead my crew has been crushed by him refusing that for me. Because that’s the real problem. He has the power to refuse me anything.

I need to leave. In any way I can.

“What do you want? I’ll beg. Is that what you want?” I step away from the wall and toward him. “I’ll beg on my knees.”

He freezes for a second, surprised by my deplorable state. “Well, I can’t say I don’t love that idea.”

That’s all it takes for me to drop to my knees. “Please, Nate. I am sorry for what I did to you. I took your freedom away out of fear and greed. I wanted my town and to own it, and I sent you to prison to strike a deal with your enemies.” I take a deep breath. “I learned my lesson. I will stay out of your way. I’ll work for you. I’ll have the Kings work for you. I’ll unite the North Shore; we’ll be the best soldiers you ever had, but please, please let me go. Let me go back to them.”

He’ll never understand who I mean by them. I’m happy for him to believe it’s my crew when I truly mean the two pieces of my heart I can’t live without. And I will beg on my knees a million times for them if I need to.

Sitting up slightly, his night-blue eyes focus on me. They’re sparkling with excitement at my debasing act.

His eyes are so special.

During summer nights, when the ocean meets the sky, the horizon line mixes two blues to give the most exceptional color there ever was. Nathan’s blue eyes make that color laughable in comparison. There’s nothing more extraordinary than this man’s eyes. Nothing can enthrall, manipulate, and betray like they do. Nothing can give you the same hope.

They don’t belong to such a heartless man. It’s dangerous. Deadly.

“Why don’t you try crawling to me?” he purrs.

I lick my lips, but I’m set on doing anything I can. So I press my palms to the floor and take one humiliating step at a time, crawling toward him. When I’m by his spread legs, I notice the outline of his hard cock through his pants.

I can’t take my eyes off it, pretending it’s to avoid his stare, not because I know the magical ways he can make my body feel.

“Please,” I try again. “I don’t want the power you have. I don’t want the respect of what you think I’m worth. I want my town. I want my home, my crew, my family. I want to be with them.”
