Kay pours herself another glass and drops into my office chair.

Just as she gets settled, Sam knocks on the door, quickly asking if he can talk to me in private. I stand up, putting my pants back on.

“I’ll be a minute,” I tell the two women.

“Mr. White, please, don’t leave,” Marcie calls out desperately as she approaches Kayla.

“You’ll be okay. She’s just a little drunk, but she’s inoffensive. Right, Kay?”

She raises her hands, acting innocent. “As harmless as an ercasgot.”

I pinch my lips to stop myself from laughing. “Escargot, darling.” And I step out.

“Update me,” I tell Sam, as we walk toward my kitchen.

“Wynne is all set, and Xi is moving on to whoever that Wolf was. Lik is getting rid of his car and taking care of yours.”

I wave a hand. “Junk it. I’ll get another one. So, how did you get Xi on it in the end?”

He pins me with a stare. “You know how.”

I laugh to myself, drinking more whiskey from my tumbler. My leg hurts like a bitch.

“You threatened your boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend. That’s low, my friend.”

He snatches the glass out of my hand and puts it on the counter. “You’re buzzed like a college sorority girl. Stop drinking. Look, I didn’t want to mention her to him, but it’s not like I had much of a choice. I blamed it all on your crazy arse anyway.”

“As you should. I would have killed her if he hadn’t listened.”

He runs a hand across his face. “Anyway. Garcia-Diaz said it should be fine, but she’ll get back to me in the morning when she’s looked at everything. Paperwork is at her office.”

I huff, taking back my tumbler from the table and sipping on it. “What the fuck do I pay her all that money for if she doesn’t keep all my files on hand.”

“Might surprise you, but people have lives. Like my date with Lik that you ruined, for example.”

I notice the chocolate cake on the kitchen island and slap his shoulder. I think he’s right. I’m a little buzzed. “Thank you for tonight. Please, go back to your boyfriend.”

He nods as he stands. “I’ll be here first thing tomorrow. It’s the deadline for the Kings and NSC to tell you if they’ll both work for you.”

I raise my glass. “See you tomorrow.”

I take him to the door and head back to my office.

Nothing could have prepared me for what I see when I open the door.

Kay still sits at my desk, her feet propped up, sipping on her whiskey. She has a huge white band-aid awkwardly taped to her forehead, and I already know she put that on herself.

I look for Marcie and find her quicker than I thought. On her front, lying on the floor, with a letter opener stabbed into the back of her neck.

“Little sunflower,” I say carefully as I step in. “Care to tell me what happened?”

She spreads her arms wide, the whiskey sloshing in the glass. “She said you deserved better than me.”
