Nate: I’m in my room. Come have our meeting here.

He doesn’t reply, but a minute later, he’s pushing the door open. He looks at the scene, mouth slightly agape.

“What the—”

I put my finger in front of my mouth, shushing him. Then I send him another text.

Nate: Can’t you see Kayla is sleeping? Text me.

He glares at me with the most hateful stare I’ve ever seen from him.

Sam: This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life. Just get out of bed and come talk downstairs. You have a fucking office you can use for business.

It’s my turn to pin him with a glare. I look down at my phone and type frustratingly.

Nate: I don’t want to wake her up. Update me.

He huffs loudly, his jaw tightening, and his thumbs type aggressively on his screen.

Sam: It’s done. The Kings and NSC have agreed to work together. We can have them distribute the next shipment.

A smile spreads widely on my face.

Nate: I’ll contact the Canadians today. They’ll have the shipment here tomorrow. And Garcia-Diaz messaged earlier to say the contract was still valid. M. Beauty will be delivering to my hotel as early as next week.

Sam: Can you get out of fucking bed now?

I send back a gun emoji with a question mark, and he rolls his eyes so hard they disappear to the back of his head.

Sam: You’ve got a trip to Baltimore coming up, remember?

Nate: My question is, who can we trust here for that?

Sam: Well, you have NSC’s contact who sells in bulk all over the tri-state area. Racer can map out some routes. Jade is your best driver. You just need to get Elliot’s and Ethan’s approval to get her working. They’re protective.

I’m about to answer, when he messages again.

Sam: If the cops ever get hold of either of our phones, we’re fucked. Will you stop being a fourteen-year-old driven by his dick and get downstairs so we can talk?

I huff. He’s not wrong. My heart is heavy when I slide a hand in Kay’s hair and slowly wake her up.

“It’s late, little sunflower. I need to get to work.”

She groans a complaint, tightening her arms around me, and my eyes go to Sam. “How am I meant to get out of bed?” I ask him, dead serious. “Have you no heart?”

Kay looks up with pinched eyebrows. The second she notices Sam, she jumps away from me, bringing the covers all the way to her neck despite wearing a nightie.

“What the fuck?” she spits. “What are you two doing?”

“We were having a meeting,” I answer obviously. “But I really need to get out of bed now.”

“Just get out of bed and have your meeting somewhere else!” she barks, ever the gentle wife.

“I told you,” Sam backs her up like the fake friend he is.

“Leave,” she orders him sternly.

“There’s a body in your office,” he says as he leaves.
