Is he really going to keep me here? How long? Will I really not be able to leave the house?

Surely, he can’t expect me to stay here twenty-four seven.

I get my answer the moment we cross the main double doors. In the marble hall with ceilings so high every single step resonates, he stops, and I do too. He turns to me, cupping my cheek in that fake reassuring way.

“You escaped through the living room windows last time, so I thought I’d warn you that all downstairs windows are locked with a key. They key is on me.” He smirks. “So unless you want to undress me, just know there’s no way out.”

There’s the front door, I don’t tell him. My eyes do it instead when they dart to the exit behind him.

“There’ll be a guard or two at the front door at all times. This isn’t really for you, though. I have a lot of enemies, and sometimes I have better things to do than kill people who are stupid enough to come for me, but I thought you should know they have orders to not let you through without me.” He continues walking without any further explanation. “Come.”

I realize I’m not following. Not because I didn’t know he wanted me to, but because I can’t. I physically can’t let him explain how I’ll be a captive in his house, forced to marry him, without at least minimum resistance. Not following him to the grand staircase is resistance, right?

“Kayla,” he huffs. “I have a big day ahead of me and it’s already ten thirty a.m. This whole convincing you to marry me took longer than I wanted it to. Will you be a sweet girl and follow?”

I narrow my eyes at him, crossing my arms over my chest. I feel completely ridiculous in a tank top with a suit jacket.

“This is kidnapping.”

His eyes widen, and his mouth drops open as he gasps before bringing a hand to cover it.

“No? Oh my god, no. Call the police.” With a dramatic shudder, his face goes blank again. “Kidnapping? Do you think that’s the worst thing I’ve ever done? Stop wasting my time, will you?”

I’m about to take a step, when his fingers snap, making me freeze on the spot.

“Do not snap your fingers at me.”

“Then follow, or you’ll be following naked with a red and sore ass.”

I’m practically vibrating from anger when I walk his way. The long hallways are interminable.

“What is it with rich people and long hallways,” I mumble. “Did you really need such a huge house for yourself?”

“For ourselves, little sunflower. What’s mine will be yours once the papers are signed. And what if we decide to have kids? They’ll all need their own bedroom.”

My gaze drops, stress eating at me again. He makes it all sound so real. Marriage…kids. I gulp.

“I need a phone,” I finally say, as we turn into yet another hallway. “I need to be able to contact my family.” I need at least that to contact the girls.

“Caden?” he asks, knowing him as my only living relative.

Instead of telling him the truth, I go for a vague answer. “My crew is my family. They’ll need me.”

He stops in front of a light wooden door. “Can you imagine every single bedroom door came all the way from Italy?” He turns to face me. “But you probably knew that. You criticize wealth because you don’t currently have anything to your name, but when you thought you were going to be rich, you wanted to buy this very house.”

Pinching a strand of black hair near my cheek, he pulls like a bully in elementary school. “I like your hair.”

Does he, though? Because his intonation could mean he’s talking about any other thing that makes him feel no specific way whatsoever.

“Sounds about as creepy as everything else you say,” I answer. “So, about that phone? I lost mine when Logan and Law chased me through the woods.

His eyes twitch slightly, and he cracks his neck. “Yes, that was annoying.”

“To say the least.”

Ignoring my sarcasm, he adds, “Every time you please me, you’ll get something you want. I’ll put a phone at the top of the list.”

“What? What do you mean, every time I please you? Not only are you keeping me captive, but on top of that, I have to be at your fucking beck and call at all times?”
