She huffs. “Kayla.”

“Yes?” I sniffle.

“Run to me. I’ll take you in.”

I hang up. I can’t listen anymore. She’s breaking down my defenses, and I have to stay strong.

The first thing I do is delete the call log. I don’t want Nate to find out who I was on the phone with. I hurry to put on the white lace thong he provided, the corset, and the suit. I don’t bother with the makeup pouch he left on the bed. I don’t have to make myself look any different for him.

As I check myself in the mirror, I hate that the suit fits perfectly, that the silk embraces the shape of my body so beautifully. The corset adds a sexy touch and breaks the formality of the suit.

Taking a deep breath, I brace myself to see Nate again.

He’s waiting for me in the foyer, looking down at his phone as he texts. When he hears my unsteady steps going down the stairs, he finally looks up.

His eyes widen for a split second before he strides toward me. As I make it down the last steps, he grabs my hand, helping me.

“I’m not used to heels,” I grunt. I rearrange the corset around my boobs. “Or clothes that include lace and bones.”

Instead of entertaining my complaints, he drops a tender kiss on my forehead. “You look beautiful, little sunflower. Radiant.”

My eyebrows pinch closer, face hardening. Not because of his words, but because of the reaction I’m suddenly experiencing. There’s a dangerous warmth spreading through my belly, and I swallow hard. Maybe I should drink acid to remind my body of the way it’s meant to feel around Nate. He’s manipulating me, and I’m being stupid enough to go along with it.

He keeps a hold of my hand. It’s delicate. He’s not forcing me out of the house. He’s not dragging me by the hand. He’s helping me walk in stupid heels.

As soon as he opens the front door, I notice Enzo standing there, and I freeze.

“Holy fuck.”

“Enzo, point that away, will you?”

The huge man makes sure the tip of his automatic is on his right shoulder as we walk by his left.

“Sorry, boss.”

“That’s an AK-47,” I hiss. “What do you think I’m going to do?”

“It’s not for you. It seems the Wolves are officially aware of me being back. I’ve had a few threats coming my way.”

“Huh. Who knows, with a little chance, they’ll kill you before we get to the town hall.”

He chuckles, letting go of my hand to open the passenger door of his car. “Chance doesn’t exist in our world, little sunflower. Only strength and intelligence. Lucky for you, I have both.”

He leaves me alone during the drive. He doesn’t taunt me, and he doesn’t make this harder than it already is. He stays silent, listening to “Save Me Some Sunshine” by Rafferty. His window is rolled down, his elbow resting on the windowsill. His head bobs as the singer asks for his sunshine not to be taken away, and my stomach tightens.

I am your sun now.

Biting my lower lip, I look at his handsome face. He must have traded his glasses for contacts because he’s not wearing them. His gaze stays focused on the road, strong jaw softened by the relaxed features of a completely blank face.

There’s nothing that could show what is possibly running through his mind. Is he thinking about his revenge? Or if this is a good idea?

“Nate.” His name slips from my mouth before I can stop it.

With his eyes still on the road, he says, “Yes?”

I scratch my throat, unsure what the best way to approach him is. “You know that…that by marrying me, you’re punishing yourself too?”

His eyes flick to me for a split second. “Are we really back on the topic of questioning whether this is happening or not?”
