My mom’s voice resonates in my head. That’s what she did. She ran to survive. She left it all behind so she could see another day.

The car slows down. There are no other cars on the road, just us. But I think Sam wasn’t far behind. We’re heading back to his house. It’s now or never.

But if I run, he can catch me. If I run, he’ll still have access to those pictures.

If I kill him however…

His eyes are on the traffic light, and I look at his one hand on the steering wheel. The other is loosening the tie around his throat. He doesn’t look worried in the slightest, doesn’t mind that he just forced a woman to marry him.

I do. I mind.

Because I would do anything to get back to my family. And if you get in my way. You die.

The light turns green, but before he can accelerate, my hand shoots for his tie. He rears back in surprise, but he’s too late. At the same time as I pull at his tie, I grab his hair with my other hand and push until his nose hits the steering wheel. The honk resonates loudly, covering his grunt, and I do it again until I see blood bursting out of his nose.

“Fuck, Kayla—"

Finally reacting, he tries to grab me, but I’ve got the advantage this time. I wrap the loose end of the tie around his neck and pull him toward me. His upper body ends up on my side of the car with all the strength I put in, and his head is on my lap.

“Don’t you know who you just married?” I grit out, adrenaline rushing through my veins at the possibility of pulling this off.

His face gets redder by the second, and his chocking eggs me on. It’s satisfying like nothing else.

“Don’t you know my fucking name?” I hiss. I feel my biceps bulging as I pull harder. “I’m the ruthless King. You don’t get to keep me captive, Nate. No one does.”

He taps around with his hands, his eyelids drooping as he tries to reach for me, but he gives up and instead helps me pull at his tie.

Confusion twists my stomach until I feel the material rip.

Fuck.

But I’m quick to react. Before he can get away from me, I reach inside his suit jacket, grab his gun holster, and pull out the weapon. He’s quick too. The second it takes me to point the muzzle to his forehead is enough for him to have pulled out the other gun and point it at me.

Silence falls heavily on the car. All that can be heard is our panting. Him more than me since he’s still catching his breath, but I’m struggling to breathe too. It took a lot of strength to subdue him. The man is made of nothing but muscles.

So here we are, two guns pointing at each other, muzzles less than an inch from our foreheads. He licks his lips, clearly fucking excited by the situation. I might be known as the woman who isn’t scared of death, but he’s different. Death makes him ecstatic.

“Little sunflower,” Nate chuckles, his face finally losing the redness, the skin going back to the sun-kissed color it usually is. “This is not exactly how I imagined our honeymoon.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “You picked the wrong victim, Nate. I will never bow to you. I will never be your wife, no matter what the papers say. You’ll die before you can ever make me yours.”

He smiles that wicked smile. “You’re already mine, Kayla.” He bites his lower lip as he looks me up and down. “No more ruthless King. Only Mrs. White.”

The door behind me opens before I can say anything. A gun presses against the back of my head, and my eyes flutter shut, taking in the new situation.

“I told you this was a terrible idea,” a British voice says from behind me.

Sam.

I knew he wasn’t far. I was too slow.

Despite the threat of both guns, I don’t lower my own weapon. I don’t fucking care. I’ll shoot. Let them kill me. Let my girls know I died trying to get back to them. Let the whole North Shore know it took two of them to bring me down.

All I see is the surprise on Nate’s face as I press the trigger.

Click.

My eyes widen at the sound, my mouth dropping open.
