Markane ruffled the back of his head, his eyebrows pinching to the center, still distraught. “Your team leader is with Asmodeus. Who knows what he’s doing to her.”

Snow’s blood turned cold as her heart raced in fear. Asmodeus would have Eva’s wings chopped off and drain her golden blood. Eva was one of the greatest warriors and he would get rid of his biggest threat.

Eva was her superior and they had fought countless battles side by side. She would give up her life for her. She wished she could ask the vamps about the rest of her team, but she didn’t want to bring them up. She had to help her superior, even if she had to do it alone.

Markane paced along the cell, rubbing under his chin and rambling, “We have another problem. After Victus retrieves the treasure, he’ll have to take it back to Asmodeus. That fucker is not going to let both of them free.” He stopped suddenly and grabbed Abacus by his shoulders. “He’s going to imprison them into ruby caskets. Then also Maria, Vara, and Kristoff. Though he can do whatever he wants with Kristoff. Then he would be free to reign over—”

“Ruby caskets?” Snow smacked the bars to get their attention.

She knew the vampire royals by name, especially Queen Maria since they had encountered each other before, so she didn’t ask about them.

Markane paced again. “Ruby burns all beings except for humans. You can imagine what a casket made from this gemstone would do to your body, can’t you?”

Snow gasped, her heart thundering as she pictured Eva in such a box.

Abacus swallowed. “He’s planning to make our world his. We’ll all become his slaves.”

“What is the Gate Key?” Desperation burned through her chest and her voice. “What does it do?”

“We don’t know.” Markane kicked the hay as he continued to pace.

Snow had no proof or knowledge of the Gate Key, but this was her chance to convince them to set her free.

“After Asmodeus locks up all the leaders, then he’s free to destroy our world and make it to his own image. If we don’t do something, then we’re all doomed. Let me help you.”

Abacus shook his head. “I don’t know. If Victus finds out we bought you, he’ll be so livid.”

“Why?” Snow asked, her voice sweet again.

Abacus regarded her for a moment, then sighed. “Despite what others might think, we want to live in peace.”

Markane gripped the bars next to his comrade. “The only reason why we have angel prisoners is because they attacked us first. If we don’t imprison them, then they will find another way. But Dawn didn’t try to kill us.”

“Dawn?” Snow belted her name, hope of escaping blooming in her chest. “Where is she?”

“She’s here,” Abacus said. “We didn’t harm her. I hope you believe us. And we bought you because we happened to be at the market. We usually turn our heads. But one look at you, and I knew you were special. And if we didn’t buy you, you would have been a subject to an experiment or someone’s slave.”

Snow reached a hand between the bars and set it on Markane’s forearm. Then Abacus placed his hand over hers. He wanted attention too.

“I appreciate what you have done for me, so let me repay you. Victus isn’t here and he’ll never know you two bought me. But right now, your king and Eva are in danger and they need our help. I believe the Gate Key opens the portal to the void.”

The two exchanged glances and schooled their features in horror. Snow felt confident her words had convinced them, but neither of them made a move to unlock the padlock.

Just as her mind reeled with a scheme, the sound of small scurrying feet came from the dungeon somewhere. Then two mice, one black and the other white with a shorter tail, snuck under the cell bars and stopped in front of her.

“You’ve come back, friends.” Snow sighed with relief and lowered to her knees.

She had sent them off to speak to other mice to find out anything regarding a Seraphim named Evangeline.

The two vamps watched with fascination. Though they only heard squeaks from the mice, Snow heard their language.

“Evangeline and Victus are at Mount Skull together,” the black mouse said. Snow named him Midnight. “That is all we know.”

“What did that one say?” Markane asked.

Snow peered up. “Your king is with Evangeline at Mount Skull.”

“Asmodeus sent them both to be killed.” Abacus put palms to his temples as if he couldn’t believe what was happening. “What else do they know?”
