Victus waved a hand, breaking me out of my daze as he gestured for me to go first. “We should get going.”

Something was different about him, but besides that he didn’t sound angry with me, and I couldn’t pinpoint what that was.

“We’re walking all the way to the castle?” I raised an eyebrow.

He tilted his head, confused. “Not walking but running. Vampire speed. I’m quite fast.” He flashed his perfect teeth. “And I assumed you’ll be flying so you’ll get there first. I think it’s best you wait for me and we go in together.”

He sounded so unlike him. Nervous. Unsure. Unable to meet my gaze.

“Did you see Joleen in the cave? Did you see the same as me? What did you see in there?”

He sighed. “Let’s talk about that later. We need to get moving.”

Victus was right, but I wasn’t going to wait for him at the castle. It was ridiculous when I could get us there faster and both of us together.

I stretched my wings to their full height and length. Victus’s eyes grew wide and stunned as if seeing them for the first time. He backed away, looking a bit nervous.

I reached out a hand. “Come with me. I’ll take us there. Unless you’re afraid of heights.”

Amusement gleamed in those stunning dark eyes. “Me, afraid? Do you even know this king?”

Not really. But he had been showing a new side of him that I was beginning to respect.

He approached closer, his hands moving toward my face then lower. “How do we do this? Where do I hold you?”

I wrapped his arms around my waist, then I draped my arms around his shoulders.

As I welcomed the hard muscle engulfing me, a wave of warmth and comfort spread throughout my body. Something awakened inside me and I shoved away the heated sensation brewing through my veins.

This feeling couldn’t be my own but Joleen’s instead, I reasoned. Perhaps her memory had lingered.

He shifted to move his face away from mine, and I was trying to do the same, but he accidentally bumped his chin on my nose. A light laugh escaped me and he smiled.

“Sorry,” he said. “It’s been a while.”

As I wondered what he meant, I realized he was talking about Joleen. She had wings and she must have taken him flying.

“Are you ready?”

“Can you go slow?” He snorted.

I flapped my wings, once, twice, taking us higher, about the same level as the top of the trees.

“This level good?” I asked, levitating in midair.

He offered a genuine warm smile. “Thank you for not leaving me behind.”

“Thank you for trusting me.”

I couldn’t believe how our friendship went from wanting to kill each other, to working for a common goal.

One side of his face—thick eyebrows, high cheekbones, and full lips—caught the sunlight and I could have sworn I had seen him like this before.

My heart flipped inside my stomach. Nerves. That was all. I was about to carry my enemy, or former enemy. I had no idea if he still wanted to kill me.

“You can close your eyes or keep them open and enjoy the view.” I flapped my wings again, faster this time like a hummingbird in flight.

“I like my view just fine.” His words sounded a bit too friendly as his piercing gaze met mine.
