I didn’t want to tell him I had father issues. One look at my grand wings and people would know Peter, a human, was not my father. It wasn't until the day I turned eighteen and feathers appeared on my back that I came upon this revelation.

My parents sat me down and told me I was special, a miracle baby born with wings. And that I must never tell a soul. Yeah, right! My mother had an affair with one of the hierarchy of angels while they were on Earth, or she had loved this angel before she met Peter.

If our family was so blessed, then why not my younger sister? She turned eighteen a few years after me, and no feathers sprouted.

Gorgo placed a hand on my shoulder. “I need your help because you have speed, endurance, you’re the best swordsman I know, and—”

“I have wings?” I arched an eyebrow.

“True, but that’s not what I was going to say. You attract beautiful women.” He jerked a chin behind me as he presented a dazzling smile.

I had heard footsteps crunching over peanut shells and inhaled the scent of jasmine before he spoke, but I had hoped the vampiress would pass me on her way to the table with demons playing cards.

“Can I help you?” I rose.

Her long dark locks draped down to her hips, the scarlet dress accentuating her curves. Mesmerizing dark eyes and lush lips drew me in. Her fingers slipped along my waistband, no doubt searching for weapons. When she found none, she ran her fingers lower down my breeches as she seductively ran her tongue across her mouth.

“Yes, you can.” She batted her eyelashes. “Why don’t you come with me. I’ll show you a good time.”

Very tempting, but I did not play with vampires and I was not a cheater.

I gripped her neck faster than she could blink, my fingers coiling tighter. Her pupils dilated as she fumed through her clenched teeth, and her lips pulled back to reveal sharp fangs. She retaliated with a swift hurl of her fists against my arm, but her strength was no match for mine.

“Wait.” Gordo stepped beside the vampiress and hiked a thumb over his shoulder. “You have too many witnesses.”

The vamps who had been staring at me jolted up and hissed, showing me their killer teeth. They could threaten me all they liked. I could take down all eight of them on my own.

“Who sent you to seduce me?” I bore my eyes into the vampire’s and released just enough pressure for her to speak.

“Your mother,” she seethed. “She’ll be dead before you can reach her.”

“What did you just say?” I squeezed harder and lifted her up, her body dangling three feet off the ground.

“The Angel of Many Faces sent me,” she said through strangled breath. “If you don’t join him, he’ll kill your family.”

I lifted her even higher as my heart pounded. Another female vamp had cornered me at the market and told me this particular angel wanted to meet me last week. I had refused. I did some investigation and found out this angel of many faces went by the name of Rafael, Phillip, Luke, and others.

“Why can’t you all leave me alone. Tell this …” I snarled. “Angel with no name that I’m no fighter and I will join no one.”

Just because of my special damn wings everyone wanted me on their side, to use me as their weapon. I didn’t know how the king found out, but he had sent Levia, one of his captains, to persuade me to join his army recently. I had kindly refused.

“You’re an idiot.” The vampiress pounded a fist on my fingers around her jugular. “The Angel of Many Faces doesn’t accept refusals. There will be consequences.”

I brought her face close to mine and growled. “Tell him to grow some balls and come ask me himself instead of sending his bitches to do his bidding. This is twice now he has sent someone else.”

“No one knows what he looks like.”

I scoffed. “Why do you follow a leader you’ve never seen?”

I was going to let her go but her fingernails elongated into grotesque talons and sank into my arm. Pain shot through me as golden blood dripped onto the wooden floor. Shit! Now all the beings in the tavern knew I was different without a doubt.

The group of vamps snapped their jaws and hissed in unison, a sound that vibrated down my chest. I threw the vampiress at them as a distraction when they charged toward me. Two vampires stumbled from the impact of her body, but six others rushed to our table.

The tallest vamp grabbed Gorgo’s messenger and with shocking speed yanked out his heart. Before he had the chance to move onto another victim, I leaped over the table, gripped his tunic and slid him across the counter. Peanut shells flew in the air and tankards crashed to the floor. The few customers sitting at the bar area bolted off their seats, ale splashing on them before they ran.

“Sorry,” I said to the bartender.

My fingers reached for the daggers sheathed on the back of my waistband inside special pockets, the reason the vampiress couldn’t find them when she searched me.
