“No. I’m not allowed to go out. You know that.” Nina opened the black curtain and placed her bag down under the gurney where the unconscious vampire named Joseph lay. “I was just about to take some blood samples from him. King Victus is expecting my answer soon. Did you need something from me?”

“Seems like you have a lot of things in that bag.” Kara examined Joseph, who was bare chested with boils all over him. She backed away when thick black tendrils wiggled under his skin like worms desperate to get out.

“What do you need?” Nina cut her tone sharp and weaved around to the other side of the gurney with a syringe. As she drew blood from his arm, she said, “I have much work to do, so if you don’t mind, either state your purpose or leave.”

When Kara moved around the gurney near Joseph’s feet, Nina held up the syringe to gauge Kara’s intention and a warning for her to back off, if she meant to attack Nina. If she came for a friendly visit, which was unlikely, the poisonous blood Nina held wouldn’t bother her. But Kara flinched.

“Victus wants to see you,” She inched closer to Nina as she spoke. “You should come with me, now.”

Victus was likely fighting for his life in Asmodeus’s castle. He wasn’t here. He didn’t request her presence. Had Nina never spied on Kara, she wouldn’t have known Victus wasn’t home and would have believed the lie that left Kara’s mouth easily.

Nina drew more blood. “I’m almost done. Please tell Victus I’ll be there very soon.”

“No.” Her voice grew angrier. “You must come with me now.” She charged.

Nina had one chance to inject the vabies blood in Kara, but just as Nina raised her arm, Kara flicked her wrist with a surge of magic and the syringe went flying behind the wall and rolled under the table.

“Why are you doing this?” Nina’s heart pounded out of her chest as she moved about the gurney and grabbed the syringe off the floor.

Joseph was the one thing keeping Kara from reaching her.

“If you’re going to spy on people, you should hide your scent, stupid human.” She hissed and crossed the distance with her magic.

She came at Nina like a mad spirit on the wind. Nina’s reflexes guided her and she pushed up the front of the gurney with all her might. Damn, Joseph’s body weighed a ton. She also knocked over the medical bag and spilled its contents.

When Kara landed on top of Joseph, the table slammed down and flipped to the side. Then Nina stabbed the syringe on her back and pushed the plunger. Got ya, traitor.

Kara rose up in one swift move as if someone had pulled a puppet’s string from the head, then landed on top of Nina. Nina screamed, kicking and punching, and she managed to land a blow to Kara’s face. She quickly rose to her feet and shoved Joseph at her pursuer.

Nina ran but fingers coiled around her ankle. She collapsed with a hard thump, stomach down by the gurney’s wheels. She grabbed the scissors that had fallen out of the bag, but when she turned, Kara hovered over her.

“You should have just come with me, stupid girl. I would have given you a swift death. I did like you, though. We could have been friends.”

No thank you. Nina already had friends, and though they looked like monsters, they had bigger hearts than her.

Nina raised the scissors and sat up. “Just go. I promise I won’t say anything.”

Kara hiked an eyebrow, offended. “You must think so little of me.” She flung her wrist and Nina flew.

Nina’s back smacked the wall and she dropped like a sack of potatoes. The room spun and five of Kara let out a mocking laugh. Pain seared through every bone and muscle, but she felt grateful she didn’t break her spine. But something wet coated the back of her head and drops of crimson liquid spotted the stone ground.

Nina crawled toward the gurney with the scissors in her hand, blood leaving a smeared trail as she climbed over Joseph. Useless to carry a weapon when fighting a supernatural, but it was better than being empty-handed.

Nina kept moving on all fours, trying to buy more time. The poison from the blood should have taken a toll on Kara by now. What was taking so damn long?

“Victus …” Nina said breathlessly as she leaned her back against the wall. Her body spent, she had nowhere to go. Besides, Kara moved faster. She might as well end here. Her life or Kara’s. Or maybe both.

“He can’t save you like before.” Kara’s lips tugged at the corner, humorless but full of evil. “Asmodeus is in his true monstrous form by now and no supernatural being nor any experimental beasts can save Victus.”

Kara pulled out a dagger from her boot, again Joseph’s body the only thing between them. “Say your prayer to your god before I—” She screamed.

Joseph had grabbed Kara’s ankles. When she collapsed, he moved at vampire speed, pounced on her, and tore off a section of her neck with one bite. Blood gushed out. It happened so fast, Nina wasn’t sure what she had seen.

Nina screamed but the sound never escaped her mouth. Her spilled blood must have awoken him. Instead of drinking Kara dry, he sniffed and craned his neck.

His crazed hungry eyes pinned on Nina. The dark tendrils on his face wiggled faster as he hissed, exposing his canines. Nina’s heart and stomach collided somewhere in the middle, then lodged up her throat.

Oh, skies! Nina had backed herself into the corner and had to climb over the flipped gurney to escape. He leaped at her on all fours like a frog and she made her last stand. She stuck out the scissors with arms extended, turned her head to the side, and hoped.
