“No licking, Licker.” Nina wiped the gooey wet saliva from her eyes with her hand, her voice sweet yet stern.

Licker panted like a dog, too happy to see her.

She tilted her head back and met each of their gazes. “I have a situation. Actually, we all do. Your king needs your help.”

“What happened? Where is he?” Hawk sounded concerned.

His odd-shaped black and white wings opened, then he closed them. His wings were pointy at the top and they looked like they had been shredded at the bottom.

The three of them had wings but Hawk’s looked more like a bird and not an angel.

“What would you like for us to do?” Willa tapped her tarsus as her long legs moved with the rhythm.

“Are we finally going to war with the asshole?” Licker’s tongue flapped as he spoke and sometimes it was difficult to understand him. “I’ll lick Asmodeus to death. His name should have been just Ass, because that’s what he is and then some.”

Nina told them all that she knew, even about Kara’s betrayal and how she almost killed her, and also about Eva.

“So, you’re asking us to fight?” Hawk furrowed his brow.

“Yes.” Nina rubbed at her crossed arms. She was asking too much. After all, their king had them locked up, though it was for everyone’s safety. “It’s going to be dangerous. And you might not make it back home.”

“Or we might,” Willa’s sultry voice turned softer. “And maybe he would give you permission to give us another round of Seraphim blood. You told us what happened to Nadira. It might help us too.”

Her words tugged Nina’s heart and she wished with everything she had that she could cure them. But she had no idea what had changed them into the beasts they were now. Another round of angel blood might make them lose their minds for good.

Seraphim blood cured vabies, as it had done for Nadira and the other vampire, but because of the unknown genetic makeup of those who had turned to monsters, there were no guarantees. Nina believed if the Seraphim blood were given at the onset of catching the disease, then the odds of being cured were much better.

“I’ll take my chances.” Hawk rolled back his shoulders and cracked his knuckles. “It’s better to die in battle as a hero then die here as a monster.”

“I second that.” Willa raised her chin. “I want to be looked at as a hero and not this ugly creature I am.”

“I’ll lick to that,” Licker said and swiped his tongue over Nina’s face.

“Licker!” Nina hollered, annoyed.

Then they shared a good laugh and Nina savored it for it could be their last.

“How will we get there?” Licker licked his nose. “It’ll take days with a wagon.”

“You all have wings.” Nina pointed at them. “Can you take flight?”

They looked at her as if she was the most brilliant being.

Chapter Forty-Two

The Past Revealed

Evangeline

I sucked in a breath and my stomach churned with disgust. Had I not been sitting on a chair, I would have dropped to my knees.

Zander was the fallen Angel of Many Faces named Rafael. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. Saving Grace, I had let him touch my body in the most intimate ways … and he might as well have kidnapped me. And … and … I pushed away the horrendous thoughts. I had more pressing matters at hand.

Victus clenched his jaw, baring his teeth. His eyes turned crimson and the veins above his cheekbones twitched, the face of the calm sea before the storm. His daggered glare could have sliced Rafael in half.

The soldiers surrounding Victus hissed a warning.

“You tell lies, demon.” Surprisingly, Rafael remained steady, but his feathers trembled. “Do not be fooled, Eva. I love you. Do not forget Asmodeus is our enemy,” he said in such a tender voice I almost believed him.
