The divine sword looked simple and plain with a metal handle and a clean blade. Nothing about it appeared worth stealing, and that was the purpose.

“Is that our resting station?” I swallowed, suddenly feeling shy.

Angels were discouraged from romantic relationships, but the longer we remained in the human world, the harder it became to keep emotions locked away. Zander and I had an immediate attraction when we first met. Only recently we had allowed ourselves to give into human temptation and kissed.

The likelihood of us surviving the war was a slim to none chance, so we decided damn the rules. As long as we were in the human world, we might as well experience the good stuff.

“It is,” he said hesitantly, tapping on the boulder. “There’s a space like this on the other side reserved for our friends, but this …” He motioned his hand with a wave. “Is all ours. If that is what you want.”

I caressed his cheeks. “Of course I do. Anywhere with you is home. Thank you for rescuing me and for all your troubles.”

Though we resided in a cavern, it felt more romantic somehow, compared to the previous home that blew up—an empty barn. But it had been our home. I should be used to moving about. We never stayed long in one location. Best to be safe.

I ran my hands down his smooth muscular arms. “Now, let me show you how thankful I am. I need to wash away a week’s worth of prison stench. Why don’t you join me?”

I kissed his mouth tenderly, and when I pulled away, I nipped at his bottom lip.

Zander moaned. “How’s that wound?”

“Like it never happened.” I walked backward toward the patchwork of flat rocks.

My near-death experience made me bolder. I wanted to do something special with him, more than just kissing. I wanted all of him.

When I reached closer to the water, I kicked off my boots and wiggled out of the uniform crusted with blood. The material pooled around my ankles, leaving me exposed. The gentle breeze caressing my hardened nipples aroused me even more.

Something warm swarmed in my belly at the thought of Zander watching my every move. I released and unfurled each of my blood-stained feathers, layer by layer and stretching every muscle that held my massive wings together to expand to their fullest.

Saving Grace, that felt good.

Zander let out a predatory sound as his eyes widened with a purpose and he swaggered toward me.

“No. Not yet.” I shook a finger. “I want to watch you undress.”

He halted a few feet from me and tugged his lips into a wicked grin, then took his time stripping off his breeches.

I inhaled a shuddering breath, taking in his muscular naked form. My first time seeing him, and I had no idea what to do. Both of us were—in human terms—virgins. I supposed we would let our instinct guide us.

“My, my, my, Zander.” I took in the hard angles and curves on his arms, legs, stomach, and all of him. “Come.”

Zander cradled me in his arms and his gleaming eyes met mine with adoration. “I’m going to show you how much I care for you. You are mine, and I am yours, as long as we live.”

I felt his words to the depth of my heart and I lowered my hands to his waist. And though I had no idea what I was doing, I wanted to touch the anatomy that made him a male. When I stroked his hardness he flinched, then that thing grew bigger, as if it was a separate being. And bigger still.

What in the holy angels!

I couldn’t understand how a simple touch made him come undone. His eyes darkened as he moaned. It dawned on me then what my squad meant by bigger.

Every member of my team was a hybrid except for Zander, and they had lived in the human world longer than me, had seen and experienced what I could only imagine. Well, I clearly had no imagination.

I wanted to please him so I got down on my knees and licked him, then put my mouth over it, only covering half of him. I must have done something wrong because that thing began to … throb?

“I can’t take it,” he said, his tone low and gruff.

He pulled me up and devoured my mouth. While he continued to kiss me, he blanketed me with his wings while his hands trailed up my back. I moaned as his feathers caressing me felt like silk to the touch.

Zander glided us upward in the air and then we plummeted into the water together with a great splash, down fifty feet. When my feet touched the pebbled ground, I pushed up to the surface. As water rippled around us, I flung my hair back out of my face.

“Little Dove, you’re beautiful.” He brushed his wet hair back and tucked in his wings. “Are you sure about this? You can’t undo what we’re doing, and once you have experienced it, you’ll want more. So I’ve been told.”
