Asmodeus stood before Zander, who was a head taller, but at the same time, Zander appeared smaller somehow.

“Kneel before your king.” The king smirked.

At those words, Tank and Otis finally looked up at Zander.

“Ssi-bal,” Tank murmured.

A muscle twitched in Zander’s jaw. “I’m a Seraphim. I do not kneel to insignificant dust.”

Asmodeus’s nostrils flared and he pounded his spear inches from Zander’s feet. “You have enough ego to fill this entire cavern. And consequences come with arrogance. I’m going to give you one last chance.”

Kneel, Zander. For your life. Just this once. Please.

Zander’s jaw clenched, trembling. But he didn’t move.

Whatever the king had in mind would not be good. He would do something to hurt any of us. There was no guarantee Asmodeus would let us go after he took Zander, but I held on to hope. Perhaps I could get through to his thick wings.

“Zander!” I hollered. “Kneel. Please.”

Zander craned his neck at me, glaring as if I had offended him. Anger flared in my soul. Those daggered eyes told me he would not comply. He was arrogant and proud, but so were all Seraphim. I’d thought he was different.

“Very well.” The king snatched one of Levia’s daggers and buried it to the hilt in Otis’s chest.

“No!” I screamed, pacing along the streambed as I tried to find a way to Otis, but Levia held a sword to Zander’s throat.

Otis bent over and his mouth opened, retching, but nothing came out. His folded wings slackened and dozens of apples tumbled in all directions.

Tank curled his body inward and cursed.

Oh, Otis. I’m so sorry.

A demon kicked an apple and it bounced against the ceiling and stuck, impaled on a stalactite.

Otis’s silver blood soaked his tunic. As long as the cuffs were on him, he couldn’t heal. He could die.

Zander’s snarl bounced against the walls. “I told you to let them go.”

Asmodeus growled. “And I told you to kneel. Are you going to do it?”

I never thought I could be as mad at Zander as I was right now. “Zander!” I hollered. “If you don’t do something, I’ll never forgive you.”

He didn’t look at me but kept his head high. When Zander didn’t budge, Asmodeus flicked his wrist like he didn’t give a damn.

“I’ll kneel.” At this point, I would say or do anything, but the king only cared about humbling Zander.

We were all going to die then.

The baldheaded soldier behind Tank plunged a sword into his back. With mouth agape, the big guy thumped forward. His head bounced on the pebbles and silver blood streamed over his shoulders, painting the dirt.

“Zander!” I paced. “Kneel, damn you.”

Zander focused on Asmodeus as if they were the only two in this cavern. Rage burned in his eyes. I shared his hatred for this evil creature who had stolen a human’s body and soul.

“If you don’t kneel …” The king took out something from Levia’s pocket. “My agreement will be null, and I’ll do whatever I want.”

Kneel, Zander.

It happened so fast I didn’t see it coming. I had my eyes pinned on Levia, who had yanked Zander’s head back, ready to slice his throat. Asmodeus stuck a small pipe into his mouth and blew.
