Do not tell anyone you’re a Seraphim or your name. Your life depends on it. The vampire at the pub had said to Gorgo … If you deliver what you promised, he will help you bring down your brother.

Bringing a Seraphim to Victus was the deal.

“I’m going to kill you.” I snarled and ran, tracking back to the tunnel. I just had to get to Tank and Otis. There was no way I could fight a slew of vamps in their den.

Why would Gorgo tell me things to watch out for, only to betray me? He had fooled me twice. No more.

Maybe Victus didn’t hear him. He was nowhere in sight.

I made it past the grand room where Abacus was likely servicing his people when the air whooshed and thickened, then fingers coiled around my neck, stopping me dead-on with a force of someone slamming a brick on my throat.

I couldn’t breathe. Too tight. No air. And those crimson eyes gleaming darker, threatened he would rip me to shreds.

Victus made one mistake, he didn’t pin me with his claws like the last time. So I punched his perfect face. A crack reverberated. I hoped I broke his nose, though he was a vampire and he would heal fast.

A perfect opportunity to slay him if I had my divine sword, actually any weapon would do, but my instinct told me not to harm him … much. I still needed him.

Victus soared backward with his stomach arching inward. He collided near the high ceiling, making a dent before he embraced his fall with a crouch. He peered up, jaw working. He didn’t look pleased.

“I’m not your enemy.” I backed away, my wings closed and ready to bolt. “I came in peace. Does that not matter?”

He rose from the floor and before I had a chance to blink, he had me pinned to the wall. Damn, he moved fast. One hand prisoned both of my arms over my head, the other hand around my throat, and his hard body pressed against mine.

I should be disgusted, but despite how much I hated him, I recalled the vamp on top of the human woman, thrusting fast and hard, and my treacherous body responded.

I’d heard tales that vampires had an uncanny ability to beguile their prey. Their attractive faces and bewitching scent, partnered with their commanding voices entranced victims, making them do whatever was asked of them.

He must be using the same supernatural powers to captivate me. Despite his effort, I prevailed and pushed the horrendous thought to the far recesses of my mind.

“Never in peace.” He growled, his hot breath fanned the shell of my ear. “You are my enemy.”

“Fine. You want to die here, right now?” I gritted the words through my teeth as I slowly released my feathers, my chest rising and falling just as fast as his.

He made the mistake of pulling back just enough for his eyes to lock with mine. I pushed off with the strength of my feathers, taking him with me. His back thumped the opposite wall and I trapped him with my body and wings.

Victus’s eyes grew wide, stunned. With an ear-piercing snarl, his feet tangled with mine to launch us into a wild spin, and then he pushed me against the wall with such force that all of the air was knocked from my lungs with an oomph.

“I loathe your kind,” he hissed, baring his teeth.

“And I despise everything about you.” I clenched my jaw.

“My hatred for you is greater.” The tendrils under his eyes throbbed.

We were thrown into a battle of push and shove, taking turns on who would be on top of our chaotic tumbling until we eventually stopped at the opposite end of the room, panting.

With my back to the wall, he took a fistful of my hair and yanked my head to the side, exposing my neck. His hot breath and his sharp fangs grazed down my skin.

I shuddered and every vein in my body seared. I wasn’t sure if it was from fear or from the heated tussle and our bodies colliding.

“If you believe I’m your enemy, then bite me.” I took a chance by saying the latter. Since he found me revolting, he would likely release me.

He gripped my hair tighter and snarled, but he made no move, only sniffed my skin and his gaze shifted to the dark strands that had rested over my cheek. He tilted his head as his features contorted to confusion.

“What are you waiting for? Bite me.”

His eyes blazed in crimson and his velvety smooth voice hypnotic to my ears. “You will not be the death of me. You’ve run out of time, I’m afraid.”

Just as I wondered what he meant, he backed away and the air vibrated with vamp power. Six soldiers with long spears surrounded me.
