“So loyal.” I gave a mocking bow, then I recalled I had to get to Mount Stones. I vaguely recalled Gorgo telling me my mother and sister were taken there. I took a step toward the vamp. “If you don’t let him go when I count to three, you’re going to wish for death. Got it? Two.”

“You didn’t say one.” The human retreated, his features contorting in fear.

Clearly, he was an amateur and had not thought things through. I might even be his first victim.

My feathers peeked out, a threat. “Fine. One, and—”

“No. Stop counting,” the human sounded frustrated. “You’re making me nervous. I just want a little of your blood. Angel blood is in high demand. And I need to buy my sister medicine. Please.”

“Is he lying about having a sister?” I pointed to the human but asked the vamp.

“What?” The human glanced between me and the vamp. “Why are you asking him questions? Just do as I say.”

I curled my lips into a smug grin. “I’m asking him because you’re paying him to do a job you’re not man enough to do yourself.” I wasn’t sure of my accusation, but I had a good sense of human intentions. “And I’m debating if I should snap your neck or rip out your heart.”

“What kind of angel are you?” The human came after me with his sword raised exactly as I expected.

Humans were so predictable, especially when they let their emotions get the better of them. I fanned open my wings and swatted him as if he were merely a bug. He soared about a hundred feet from us, nearly missing a tree, and landed in a stream with a big splash.

“You’re crazy.” The vampire backed away, his gaze never leaving mine.

“You think this is crazy, wait until you see my wild side.” I bared my teeth.

The vamp ran off at lightning speed.

Asher straightened his shirt and raised his chin, his voice snarky. “’Do whatever you want with him? He’s not my friend?’”

I chuckled as I slapped his back the way Gorgo did to mine—quick and hard. “I was only joking.”

Asher stumbled forward, curse words flowing out of him. “Good to know I mean so much to you.”

“Yeah. Likewise. Now try to keep up.” I dashed forward, weaving around trees and thickets.

“You’re not flying us?” Asher’s footsteps thumped behind me.

“I fly no one,” I hollered over my shoulder.

I would have taken Simone wherever she wanted to go. My heavy heart weighed like a mountain on my chest. But my pain didn’t matter. I had to rescue my mother and sister.

“But you carried Gorgo.”

“I was drunk and I don’t remember.” I slowed my pace to match his and veered on the dirt road.

“But I can’t run all the way to the castle.”

I rolled my eyes. I’d thought demons had the same strength and endurance of angels, but I’d thought wrong. No, Gorgo always kept pace with me. Must be just Asher.

“We’ll stop by a barn and steal a horse.”

“Then where will we go?”

“Silorn. To find Gorgo. He had said to meet him at the forest by Mount Stones if we got separated. Now, try to keep up.”

No matter how fast I ran, the warmth of Simone’s body invaded my own, and the hurt from her rejection drilled deeper into my heart.

Simone being a demon was not the issue. She was repulsed by my very existence. It had taken many years for me to accept that I had wings, and she had crushed me down with just words in one day.
