I dreamt about the same tall muscular figure with the velvety voice, and the words that repeated like a mantra. “Two halves of the same soul.”

Why was I having the same dream? Who was this being and what did he mean to me? And why was he calling out to Joleen? Perhaps I was having a nightmare instead.

I assessed the dark brick walls, the scattered hay, and the torch lights beyond the bars—prison. Then the memories flooded of Nadira holding a fabric doll, Victus pinning me against the wall like he was about to sink his teeth into my neck, and Gorgo, that traitor.

“Hello.” My voice echoed down a dark tunnel. “Anyone here?”

“I’m here,” said a small female voice.

I rose on the straw stained with my blood and limped to the bars. Hematite. Victus made sure no angel could escape.

“Who are you?” Wrong choice of words if I wanted to get to the point. “What are you?”

“My name is Sarah,” a sweet female voice came from the right of me. “I’m an angel. A Cherubim. My team, section 862, was ambushed by demons. The demons sold the ones who survived to prostitution or to a scientist. Even though I’ve been locked up, I’m grateful I’m not in either of those situations. Who are you?”

“I’m a Seraphim. My name is Evangeline. How long have you been here?”

She let out a gasp and excitement filled her voice. “I’ve heard of you. You’re one of the greatest female warriors. You’ve fought many battles and led your team to victory.”

My team and I had killed countless demons until we were ambushed by vampires. The lead vampire lined up my team and slaughtered them, but Michael showed up in time to save Snow and me. I was devastated and it took some time for me to push the fear aside and get back up.

I wanted Michael to join the Order of Angels, but I ended up promising him I would never speak of his existence. When Otis and Tank were on their knees at the cavern, our situation brought back terrible memories.

One of the greatest female warriors, I was not. I felt so small in this cell. No weapons. No team.

“Can’t you get us out?” A male’s voice this time.

“That’s James,” Sarah said. “He’s been here the longest.

“How many of you are here? Are all prisoners angels?” A wave of pain made me weak at the knees, so I slid down and pressed my back against the wall. Damn these cuffs.

“Yes,” said another male voice. “There are many of us. So what are you going to do to get us out, Evangeline?”

I didn’t like his demanding tone, and I especially didn’t like the way he said my name, but I understood his frustration.

“She can’t, John,” Sarah began. “Unless we find a way to bring down these bars.”

“Then what was the point of the lesser angels sacrificing their lives to save a Seraphim,” said a female with a hoarse voice at the far end. “They are worthless, no better than us.”

“You’re being rude, Tia,” Sarah shouted.

“No,” I winced. “I mean, she’s right. You shouldn’t sacrifice yourself for anyone. You’re just as worthy. I promise with every feather of my wings that I will find a way to get you out.”

No one said a word. Only the heavy sighs and the shuffling of hay reverberated. They didn’t believe me. I understood, for I had been burned before too.

I shook my head to unsee Zander unwilling to kneel before Asmodeus to save our friends. He better have a good answer for me. I had to prove to the prisoners I would keep my word and I was different from other higher-ranking angels.

Torchlight flickered, and faint footsteps padded down the dark tunnel. Too light to be Victus or soldiers. A sharp breeze waved through the prison and my feathers twitched.

Something in the air didn’t seem quite right, as if an invisible wall enclosed the dungeon. When the being approached my cell, I rose slowly, keeping my back against the wall.

“Hello,” Nadira said with a sweet soft voice, one arm wrapped around her fabric doll.

I could have sworn I’d heard two sets of footsteps. The same violet dress on her told me a day had not passed, unless she wore the same dress the next day. The low hood on her head almost covered her eyes.

“Did your father or brother send you, or did you come on your own?” I took a small step closer, afraid to spook her.

“He’s not either.” She sounded offended. “And I came without him knowing.”
