The smell of deer blood escaped his breath. Not human, but animal. Something must be off with my senses.

He stared at me for a second longer, then the veins beneath his eyes twitched, then pulsed again faster. The air thickened and the tension between us grew.

Without a warning, he drew me even closer. The sharp tips of his incisors, along with the soft brush of his nose, grazed down my neck while his other arm wrapped around my waist.

The room spun in dizzying pleasure as my stomach flipped and my pulse raced, sending hot tingles throughout my body, especially down below. What was he doing to me?Was he sniffing me and deciding if my blood was sweet enough to drink?

Oh, God. I wanted more. I didn’t want him to stop.

Was this how the vampires seduced their prey before the kill? Now I understood why the man in the tavern allowed the three vampires to feed on him, and the humans in the rooms by the tunnels gave into the vamps.

This arousing, pleasurable sensation was like a drug and I couldn’t get enough, and yet I wanted to push him away. I suddenly felt ashamed and dirty.

Victus shoved me back, leaving me panting and unfulfilled with a lustful need he had produced. With a growl, his anger thundering in the room, he flung me across the room as if he was merely tossing a plate and sat back in his chair, composed as if nothing happened.

I whipped out my wings and fanned once to stop the momentum just inches from slamming into the wall. Just before I tucked in my wings, I felt for the syringe still inside my pocket. Good.

“You’re an ass,” I called as I strutted back to my seat. “If you hate me that much then you should have bitten me. Coward.”

I shouldn’t provoke him, but since he didn’t spare a glance my way, I figured I was safe. I wouldn’t give up though. I would find another way to convince him. He had to take me. I had to get out of here.

Abacus fanned his face with his hand as he chuckled. “It’s so hot in here. I’m getting so aroused by the both of you. You two should get a room.”

“Shut up,” Victus and I snapped in accord.

Abacus snickered as he clapped. “You both said it at the same time. This is so much fun.”

Markane pulled away from the blonde and wiped his lips. “This feathered bitch is a handful. She should die.”

“She will.” Victus’s gaze bored into mine. “In due time.”

Not if I kill you first. I had opened my mouth to give him a piece of my mind when the door swung open. Kara scurried in with Nadira in her arms. Nadira wore no cloak and only a nightgown.

“My king.” Kara sounded alarmed. “She’s gotten worse.”

I rose. “What’s the matter with her?”

Victus moved in vampire speed and cradled Nadira in his arms. “Have you taken her to Nina?”

“No. I wanted to ask you first.”

Victus turned to his brothers. “My order stands. We’re not going to the castle. I don’t trust Asmodeus. For all I know, this feather being could be working with him to lure me into a trap. Markane, put the cuffs on her and take her back to her cell. And don’t talk to her or ask her any questions. Her kind is manipulative.”

As if their kind wasn’t. But Nadira being unconscious might work to my advantage. He was right. I knew how to be manipulative when lives were depending on me.

Chapter Twenty-Two

My Blood

Evangeline

After Markane cuffed my wrists, the soldier with curly hair shoved me back to my prison.

Footsteps scuffled from the other cells.

“Evangeline, are you all right?”

Sarah must be standing by the bars for her to sound so close.
