I broke away from Levia as I open my wings halfway, preparing for flight or battle. I hoped neither. She didn’t speak, and I assumed I had been wrong about her helping Zander with the rescue mission.

Something thumped behind me. My heart skipped a beat. Human physicians paid top coins to get angels for experimentation. They drained their blood and used it for medicine and for other things, and also displayed the wings like trophies. Revolting. I prepared to fight.

“I’m right here, Little Dove.” A husky voice reverberated through my blood. Just the sound of his rough, masculine voice warmed my insides to the melting point.

I swallowed a lump as I turned to him, standing three feet away. The soft breeze tousled his shoulder-length hair. The sunlight illuminated his massive white and gilded wings and all the hard lines of rippled muscles on his arms and bare chest.

“Little Dove.” His voice cracked and joy filled his features.

“You came for me.” I pushed back my tears of gratitude and relief.

Levia let out a scoff and rolled her eyes, but her lustful gaze lingered on Zander.

“Of course I came for you.” Zander’s eyes darkened as he tucked in his wings. His gaze lowered to a wet golden stain on my hip. “Are you hurt? Is that your blood?”

“Don’t worry. I’m fine.” I glared at Levia.

The pain had lessened and the wound had begun to heal faster without the cuffs, but if I had to defend or attack, I might make it worse.

He gave a displeased grunt. “We need to leave now. This is a rescue mission, not a battlefield.”

“Good point. I’m done here.” Levia retreated. “Remember our deal, Zander. You owe me one.”

Zander’s massive wings began to unfurl, and fear replaced the lust in her eyes.

“I’m going to have to go back and fake an injury or something.” Levia peered up at the smoke filling the stadium like a blanket of clouds.

I ground my teeth. “Maybe I can stab you in the stomach to repay you for the kindness you showed me. Would that work?”

That bitch didn’t have to cut me.

“I told you not to harm her.” Zander curled his fingers inward, his biceps flexing.

She dusted ashes off her black tunic and breeches. “I had to give the audience a show. Just be thankful it was a flesh wound. I could have done worse.”

“A flesh wound?” I took a step to wring her neck when air whooshed, indicating Zander was on the move.

He appeared behind Levia and she bumped into his chest. She gave a little start, her defiance fading.

“Not so fast.” His voice was gruff and full of warning. “I owe you one, but choose wisely, and remember you need to keep your end of the bargain. Do you remember it?”

She rolled her eyes and huffed out an annoyed breath. “I will not kill angels or … ugly doves.” She flashed a quick glance at me. “And I am to inform you if there’s a reason to be concerned. Anything else, your highness?” She gave him a once-over and then seductively ran a hand down the rippling muscles of his chest and stopped at the waist of his pants. “I can promise you more, if you’d like. I’m sure I’ll be more pleasing than that one.” She jerked a chin in my direction.

I wasn’t a jealous type, but Levia was stunning. Her coloring was much like Dawn’s—reddish curly hair that brought out the amber in her eyes. A tight, clingy leather uniform showed off her curvy body. Her husky voice alone could seduce anyone, male or female alike.

I growled, a warning to take her hand off what was mine, but it was short-lived. My feathers ruffled and footsteps pounded at the alley entrance.

Twenty demon soldiers with eerie dark eyes rushed toward us with swords, exposing their monstrous forms. They were all shirtless and bald—lumps and ridges on their leathery skin that made them look like living rocks.

Levia melted into the shadows and disappeared, leaving the two of us to defend ourselves. Coward. She could have at least given me her dagger. I held no weapon and was still weak from the lingering effects of the hematite.

Zander rushed in front of me, his wings folded back, engulfing me but not completely. He could take them, but that would leave me exposed. Under different circumstances, this would be an easy battle, but until I regained my strength, I might as well be a damsel in distress. I hated that feeling.

The group inched closer, growling and hissing.

“I told you the prisoner was here.” The demon who had spotted me limping away with Levia puffed out his chest and pushed back his shoulders.

“You have two choices.” Zander fanned his feathers out. “Leave now or die by my blade.”
