“Did she have enough to drink?” Victus’s hands hovered near Nadira’s fingers tight on Eva’s shoulders, ready to pry her away.

Though he would pick Nadira’s life over Eva’s, he didn’t want the feather being to die if he could prevent it. He needed her blood to test more vamps with vabies.

The moment he saw Eva for the first time, his pulse raced and his breath hitched. He couldn't look away, even as a chill traveled through his veins.

She was so strikingly similar to someone from his past that it made him feel like he’d known her all his life. Like an old friend he had forgotten about, but he couldn’t quite sink his teeth into his memory.

Her scent, that damn spring scent, intoxicating, drove him mad. He was familiar with the smell from somewhere, or someone. He couldn’t recall, so he kept sneaking whiffs of her in hopes a memory would surface. The dark locks of her hair tugged at his memory too. Where had he seen someone with hair like that before?

“I don’t know if she drank enough.” Nina clasped her hands under her chin, looking worried.

Eva’s eyes rolled back. She entered a state of delirium. Nadira had to stop drinking from her soon.

Rumors said only a divine blade could take down a Seraphim, but he couldn't be sure. And he hoped Eva hadn't linked up with his daughter’s memories.

Victus didn’t want Nadira to share her past, which was his too, with Eva if she already didn’t know how vampires were created. But how could she not? She was a Seraphim.

Not only did she think vampires were savages, her ego was just as big as his. And there was something about her that made his skin crawl in good and terrible ways.

Without another second to waste, Victus yanked the feather being off Nadira. While Nina assisted Eva to her feet, Victus helped his daughter to sit upright, who looked fondly at the feather being. Perhaps she wanted to thank her.

Nadira was a kind soul. Stubborn at times. But she had a good heart. She possessed the same admirable traits as her mother.

Kara let out a long breath, still by the bars, concentrating on her ability to keep the captives silent. She was not only a seer but they also called her kind witches. Compared to vampires and demons, witches were a rare species. No one knew exactly how they came to be, but from Kara’s studies, they were usually a mix breed of demons and angels.

Victus had saved Kara from demons and humans when they tried to burn her alive in front of a crowd, proclaiming she was a magus. Those fools believed witches possessed their victims’ minds. Ever since he rescued her, she served him in exchange for his protection.

Victus appreciated Kara’s power and was relieved the prisoners could not retaliate with any form of verbal attack. He found it unpleasant to listen to their harsh words and he didn’t need any distractions.

It was the prisoners’ fault for being locked up anyway. Had they not attacked him, they would have been free to roam about the world. Sure, Victus hated angels, but he didn’t capture them for sport. He wasn’t as heartless as Eva and the others believed.

When the feather being collapsed, Nina placed two fingers on her neck and counted. Victus almost rescued her from falling, but he let her be and reminded himself that she was his enemy.

Nina set Eva’s cuffed wrists on her abdomen and lowered her dress that exposed her legs. Her back was to Victus as she adjusted Eva’s boots.

Her action seemed awkward and therefore suspicious but he trusted Nina not to undermine him. He did save her life and he could end it as well.

“She’ll be fine.” Nina dusted straw off Eva’s hair. “But I don’t know what state she’ll be in when she wakes up.”

Nadira grabbed the feather being’s hand, her gratitude showing from her beaming smile.

“She’s a Seraphim. She’ll live.” Kara continued to stand by the door, feeding her energy throughout the dungeon.

“Now that Evangeline has saved Nadira, will you keep your word and take her to Asmodeus?” Nina asked.

Why did she care about what Eva wanted?

Depending on how much vampires drank from humans, the victims either died or slept for days to recuperate. But she was no human, and he had no idea how fast Seraphim recovered.

My job is to either bring in or kill Asmodeus. I prefer the latter … We’re stronger together. Eva’s words filtered through his mind.

Victus might regret his decision, but a deal was a deal. And he needed the feather being to recover fast.

“Take the cuffs off her, now.”
