I fisted my trembling fingers. “I came for you as you did for me.”

But I had no escape plan. At least I got to see him, and he knew I was alive. We could work together to kill Asmodeus. Perhaps I should consider his offer to join his legion and then use my position as an advantage.

Asmodeus sauntered toward Zander and halted three feet from him. “Quite the reunion. Don’t you think?”

Zander growled, the sound thundering and bouncing against the walls. Any louder, the walls would crumble.

Asmodeus smirked. “Guess what my pretty little bird agrees to do? She’s going to find a Gate Key for me.”

“I didn’t agree to anything.” I realized my mistake when he yanked the chain around Zander’s wrists and forced him to dip his head into submission.

Zander wouldn’t kneel to save his friend’s lives, so lowering his head must be killing his ego.

“Shall I force him down on his knees?” Asmodeus tugged at the chains but not hard. “We know how much he enjoys submitting to me.”

Zander snarled.

Why couldn’t Asmodeus search for the Gate Key himself? Or send his soldiers? Why me? Perhaps the Gate Key was something only a Seraphim could touch.

“Eva, do you agree to find the key?” Asmodeus’s eyes turned inky black. When I didn’t answer, he took one of the soldier’s daggers and pointed at Zander’s heart. “How about now?”

“Don’t touch him.” I rose out of my seat, but the five soldiers in front of Asmodeus raised their spears at me.

Asmodeus gripped a fistful of Zander’s hair and pressed the blade to his throat, his eyes brimming with anger. “Or I could slice his neck and let him bleed. Or better yet, I could lock him in a casket made from rubies. You let me know.”

Burning flames. The small piece of ruby made me feel like I had been tossed in fire. A casket would turn Zander mad. I had no alternative.

I sat back down, trying to maintain my composure, and put my folded hands on my lap. “I have no idea where or how to find it,” I said with a calm tone.

The Gate Key opened the only portal to the deepest abyss, where the darkest souls resided. Only a few of the Seraphim were aware of the Gate Key, but we were not informed what it looked like.

I couldn’t imagine Asmodeus wanting to open the portal and let more chaos into this world he worked so hard to control, unless annihilation was his plan. If so, he would have gotten rid of the human race when he first took over.

He let go of Zander, a smug grin spreading. “The Gate Key is in Mount Skulls in Whiten.”

“No! No one has come out of there alive.” Zander’s voice boomed, the chains on him clanking when he took steps toward Asmodeus.

The guards raised the spears at him and he halted.

How did he know no one came out alive? It was possible Asmodeus had tried and might have told him.

Asmodeus regarded me. “That’s because no one is as brave and smart as you. If there’s a will, there’s a way. You can take a few of my soldiers. Perhaps even Levia.”

I scoffed. “I’m going alone.” I felt emboldened knowing Asmodeus needed my help, so I walked toward Zander without his permission. As expected, he didn’t try to stop me.

Zander stiffened when I placed a palm to his cheek then he released a long sigh. “You shouldn’t have come. You went against protocol for me and now you’ll have to do that bastard’s bidding.”

“Don’t worry about me.” I rose on the tip of my toes and ran my fingers through his hair. “I’ll get what he wants and free you.” I leaned closer for his ears only. “Then we can be together again and bring the monster down.”

Zander dropped his shoulders and he looked so small.

I stroked his face again and lowered my hand down his chest. Heat blazed through me, recalling our kiss and how good it felt when he was inside me.

“Zander, don’t despair. Just hang on. I’ll be back soon.”

He caressed my face, the chains around the hematite cuffs clanking together. “Be careful.” He lowered to kiss my mouth, soft and tender, and then whispered, “Hurry, Little Dove. Come back to me so I can touch you again. You are all I can think of.”

My violet eyes met his hazel ones, and I caressed his cheeks before I backed away. The sooner I got what Asmodeus wanted, the sooner I could kill him with Zander’s help.
