Hurry, my mind shouted. I grabbed Abagail’s arm and led everyone to the door. I peered from side to side.

I waved my hand, directing the women along the same path I’d taken to get there. The sounds of whips lashing and the liquid over the giant fire bubbling hid the noise of shuffling feet of not just the women with me, but the men and children on the far side of the cavern. Gorgo, Asher, and Sam ushered the prisoners toward the cave entrance to exit.

I caught a glimpse of Otis on the third level slope with the children sprinting quietly on the incline. He tossed one child at a time to Tank on the top level. So much faster that way.

Getting the prisoners out was going smoothly so far, but there was a huge problem. What about the ones still working?

I didn’t get a chance to figure out a plan. A guard cracking a whip at the men wheeling the cart caught a sight of us going up the incline.

“Hey!” The guard raised his hand high and pointed at me. “Get them!”

The women under my watch screamed.

I shook Abagail’s shoulder to meet my gaze. “Listen. Remember Gorgo, my demon friend?”

She nodded.

“He’s here to help us, along with his friends. Don’t be afraid.” I pointed to the top level. “Lead everyone up there and find Gorgo.”

“What about you?”

“I need to cause a distraction or none of us is going to make it. Go!”

I expanded my wings and jumped and landed in front of the guards, sprinting up the incline behind the women.

“Going somewhere?” I said.

“Who are you?” The guard pointed a spear at me, twenty of his men behind him in a line. “Surrender or face the consequence.”

“Maybe you should ask him.” I pointed at Otis floating in midair with his wings halfway open.

“Do you like apples?” Otis held a cold stare.

The lead guard barked out a command, “Get them!”

His spear arced through the air like a bolt of lightning aimed straight at me. I sidestepped his thrust with ease, moving with the speed of a panther. The metal tip whooshed past my face. He growled and tried again, missing again and again.

Otis was a blur of motion, darting and weaving as spears rained down upon him. He moved with the fluidity of a hummingbird’s wings—quick and light.

“My turn.” Otis smirked.

In one smooth motion, he snatched an apple from between his feathers and let it fly. The fruit whistled through the air like an arrow before connecting with its target—a guard in the back row—with a sickening thud.

Each apple found its mark, nailing a demon in the head. Otis never missed, and one by one, they screamed and plunged into the fiery pit. I’d had enough of the guard still attacking me.

His spear narrowly missed my chest, so I grabbed it and yanked it out of his hands. Then I kicked the guard off the ledge. He screamed as he thumped hard against the boulders instead of in the fire.

“Time to do some damage.” I soared down to the first level and landed in a crouch.

Otis beside me, and Tank landed shortly after.

A soldier had drawn back his whip, intending to crack it at the children carrying buckets of water. I grabbed the end, curled it around my fist, and yanked it out of his hand. The guard whirled and narrowed his eyes at me, realization dawning.

“Intruders! Get them!”

While Tank gathered the children, women, and men, leading them up the slope, Otis swung his sword to attack and defend. I wielded the whip with speed and precision at incoming soldiers.

My whip coiled around their blades, yanking them from their hands. I sent them sailing to the firepit where they landed with a splash in the hot lava.
