“Chicken,” Rory mindlessly says, still munching on her donuts. “Can we get extra cheese?”

My daughter is a straight-up G when it comes to ordering off food trucks now. I couldn’t be more proud.

“Heck yeah,” Mia replies. “Then we have the Italian truck next.”

My nose scrunches because crap. Heavy food, then six more trucks to go. “Small plate for that one. We need to get through these trucks.”

Rory glances over her shoulder at me. “Mommy, we have to keep going.”

Blowing out a heavy exhale through my lips, I refuse to let my daughter down on her food truck excursion. “Alright, girl. I’ll try.”

“Try harder.”

Mia laughs as I roll my eyes and sigh, shaking my head at her independence because I wonder where she gets that from.

As we inch closer in line, my cell phone buzzes and I fish it out.

HUDSON: What’s it gonna take for you to come over?

I smile over my screen. The man is insatiable as hell, and I’ve already told him yesterday that I had plans today. Plus—I’m not going to lie—I’m exhausted with how many hours that man keeps me up at night.

Your girl needs a rest and, if I don’t get one, I’m going to pass out and bang my head onto my desk at work or something. I’m not looking forward to a bump or an extra five minutes of makeup time to hide it.

LIV: Don’t confuse me, Hudson. You almost sound like you miss me and it’s sweet.

HUDSON: There’s nothing sweet about the things going through my mind right now, Opie.

HUDSON: Come over.

LIV: What about the ‘missing me’ part?

HUDSON: What do you think?

I perk a brow because of his stubborn ass. With the amount of effort this man is throwing in to get me in his arms, he’s going to need to give me more than that.

Powering down my phone, we’re up next to order our food and Rory is already chomping at the bit to eat again.

“They have donuts!” she beams, folding her hands together in delight.

“We just had donuts,” I chortle, rustling her hair with hand fingers. “Let’s get a churro.”

“Donuts!” she repeats. “We need more donuts.”

Apparently, Hudson needs more of my attention because my phone vibrates again.

HUDSON: Of course, I fucking miss you. Happy?

LIV: Was it that hard to say?

HUDSON: I thought it was obvious.

LIV: And I thought it was obvious that I wouldn’t be coming over today. Since I already told you, I was busy.

HUDSON: Doing what?

Nice try.

Mia, Rory, and I move up to the truck to give out our order, and a wave of emotion courses through my body at this moment.
