“One night,” I blurt out because I can’t do a whole weekend with him. I’d rather have a root canal or watch a Starbucks burn than have to listen to his constant bitching and complaining. “We’ll leave Sunday. You had an emergency and we had to leave.”

“Why does it have to fall on me?”

I can’t please this guy. It’s utterly impossible.

“Alright, then I’ll tell them that my d—” I immediately cease my sentence right there because I almost just ratted myself and spoke about my daughter.

The next thing out of Hudson’s mouth will probably be I was a whore and that’s how I got knocked up.

“You’ll tell them, what?” Hudson presses and I shake my head because I should just turn around.

“Nothing. Don’t worry about it. I’ll get us out of there. But I’m shaving off some time.”

“No, you’re not,” he retorts. “Agreement was already made.”

“And the agreement changed. We’re not staying a full weekend.”

“That’s up to you. But I agreed to it, so my terms stay the same.”

My neck snaps over to his side of the car and I glower at him. “Are you always this miserable? You’re like an emo asshole that forgot the whole world doesn’t care that you hate your life.”

“Why would I hate my life?”

“Beats the crap out of me.” I return my focus to my driving before I kill us both. “Feel free to do a tuck ’n’ roll at any given time during this trip.” A chuckle rumbles from his side of the car, but I won’t accept an ounce of it. “Oh, no. Don’t laugh. That shit isn’t allowed in this car.”

“My bad,” he drawls. “I didn’t know there were rules in this car.”

“Yeah. No fucking judging.”

“Why? You’ve judged the fuck out of me.”

“I have not.”

“You just called me emo and that I allegedly hated my life.”

I bristle because I’m lacking with seeing his point. “I was just stating facts.”

“You don’t know me.”

“I know enough.”

“If you’re worried about your mother buying our story, it won’t be a problem.”

“I’m not. With the way you’ll act, it won’t be surprising when my mother finds out that we broke up. You can’t date the personality of a wall for too long.”

I receive that intense glare from him again out of my peripheral but, hey, he’s not the most sunshine-filled person in the world.

And I’m sure by the time this is over, we’re going to be well off with wanting to be as far away from each other as humanly possible.

Or the other one will be dead, take your pick.

HUDSON

Olive’s mother, Emily, is more annoying than I could have ever imagined in my head.
