Having a significant other is a job.

And one I don’t want to slave away at.

“And?”

“I’m committed, Liv,” Norah says matter-of-factly. “You act as though that’s above you or something.”

“I’m twenty-three.”

“And immature as hell. Your decisions in life have made that perfectly clear.”

Rory.

I clamp my teeth shut because I’m not doing this with her right now. I’ve been on this rollercoaster ride, hoping my sister would love my daughter just as much as I do, but Norah only sees Rory as something that should’ve never happened in the first place.

If I were married, maybe she would.

Yet since I’m not and don’t plan to be anytime soon, Rory is a mistake in my older sibling’s eyes.

And I can’t stand it.

“Vaguely mention my daughter one more time and that knife is going to be sticking out of your ass, sister.”

Norah opens her mouth, but another annoyance opens the sliding door to the backyard and saunters in.

“Soooo…Olive…” My fingers tighten around the handle of my knife as my brother’s latest girlfriend of two months cuts into my lovely conversation with my sister in a bright red bikini top and shorts that are practically a thong.

I’m not going to lie, my jaw actually dropped a little when she came downstairs with it on earlier because she’s got a banging body.

And her name is Summer.

Literally perfect and warm and absolutely grating because she’s eye candy that doesn’t have to worry about my mother hounding her about it.

She’ll save that for my brother.

“Where did you meet the god outside?”

“It’s her boss,” my sister fills in for me as if it’s scandalous as all hell, and Summer beams in delight.

“Noooo way.”

“Yes way,” I drawl, grabbing yet another plump tomato even though the salad has enough. Maybe I can shove a few down Norah’s throat to get her to shut the hell up.

“Is it serious?”

My brows instantly clash together as I peer up at her stealing a cucumber slice and watching me with sudden interest. “What?”

“Serious,” she repeats. “Like…how good is he?”

“Summer, this is really inappropriate,” my sister chides lightly. “I was just telling my sister that she needs to settle down. Not date some old dude who probably has been married before with two kids.”

Summer doesn’t hide the expression that flashes over her face that alludes it would make him less attractive. “Does he?”

I don’t fucking know, probably not.

“We just started dating,” I offer semi-honestly. “But no, he hasn’t mentioned anything about being married.”

Summer wipes a hand over her forehead. “Phew. Because that’s just too much baby mama drama. And then you can’t leave when you want to because you have the kids…”
