So, I’m not.

“Was I supposed to?”

He grinds his jaw and shoves himself spine-straight. I don’t know what I did wrong but clearly he’s pissed. “No. Have fun with Spencer.”

Then he strides away and doesn’t give me one thing to do for the rest of the day.

Or even comes out of his office for air.

“Mommy, I wanna come. Why can’t I come with you?”

I hold back tears that threaten to leave my eyes and glance down at Rory.

She’s all dressed up in a pink dress with small roses on it. She did her hair, too. Throwing on fake clip-on earrings to make herself look extra presentable to my parents.

“Grandma is going to serve meatloaf and I don’t want her to try to force you to eat it,” I fib because I don’t know what’s on the menu for tonight. “I’m saving you, baby.”

Rory sticks out her tongue. “Yuck. Can I eat something else?”

I drop to my haunches and level my face with my daughter. I said I wasn’t going to go to my parents’ house for my birthday but my mother got me.

Dad bought me a cake.

Something that’s pretty damn big for him because Mom handles all that shit, so I promised myself and my daughter that this is the last time I’m going to separate my double life.

No more pretending she doesn’t exist.

No more leaving her out.

No more of Mom and my sister trying to match me up either.

“I have something planned for me and you tomorrow that’s going to be so much fun, you’re not going to be able to contain yourself.”

Rory’s blue eyes widen in excitement. “What?”

I inch closer to her. “There’s a food truck festival—” Rory immediately begins jumping up and down, clapping her hands together in tandem.

If there is one thing my daughter and I love, it’s food.

All day.

Every day.

My daughter knows my dream is to open a food truck one day and she fantasizes about working on it with me. I’m just happy she enjoys doing these things with me because it only makes me more determined to make it a reality.

“You wanna go?”

“Yes, yes, yes!” she squeals. “I want to eat everything.”

“Same,” I reply with a smile. “We’re going to spend the whole day there.”

Rory decides to make a show of her enthusiasm and starts running around the apartment like it’s going to speed up time. “I’m going to eat everything! I’m going to the truck festival.”
