HUDSON: Be there in a second.

Opening the window, I cautiously pop out the screen, not knowing what to do with it when I hear Hudson say seconds later, “Give it here.”

Glimpsing downward, my brows pinch when I clip, “How the hell are you here already?”

I feel him grab the other end and let go, then climb on top of the toilet seat, pushing my head through the window opening.

“Hey, baby.” I locate Hudson’s large figure in the dark then and quickly decide this is an awful idea.

“It’s too high.”

“I’ll catch you.” I’ve never been afraid of heights before until I was about to hang off a small window and possibly break my neck. “Unless you wanna sneak out the front door and make this less dramatic.”

“Says the dickhead who wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

“I could say the same about you.”

Touché.

Yet still annoying nonetheless.

“I didn’t know it was this high up.”

“I still got you, baby.”

The thing is, he probably does. And going back out to the living room to argue with Mom about where I’m going isn’t something I feel like doing on my day.

“Prop your foot on the edge,” Hudson instructs me. “You’re not that far up.”

“I’m going to knock you over.”

He tsk-chuckles at me and rocks his head back and forth. “Yeah…I don’t think so.” Following his instruction, my heart slams uncontrollably in my chest with adrenaline. “You sure you don’t want to go out that front door?”

“You second-guessing yourself now?”

“No.”

“Then fuck no,” I retort flatly. “I’m ready.”

“On the count of three.”

“How about five?”

“Three,” he counters simply. “Then just jump.”

Easy for him to say.

Settling myself on the edge, I wait for his countdown and throw my trust into someone who might be setting me up. Hudson might be trying to solve a problem of getting rid of me but then he’d be the dramatic one in this non-exclusive relationship.

“One,” he begins, setting my blood cold while my brain and body battle it out with how stupid of an idea this is. “Two…”

It’s on the tip of my tongue again to tell him I can’t do this, but I refrain.

If I can’t trust him to catch me when he offered this, then I know where we stand and how to move forward.

“Three.”

I launch myself off the window, quickly realizing how stupid this was when Hudson’s strong arms wrap around my thighs and he props a palm on my spine.
