I scan the area for immediate threats. “Don’t know yet.”

The doors up ahead silently swing closed, and I look for another exit sign. Except those other routes are blocked by men in dark suits, and I doubt they’re hotel security. A glint of metal in the low light confirms my suspicions.

Two men step further into the room and shoot multiple rounds into the ceiling. People shriek at the loud noise.

I pull Arianna down, covering her body with my own. Going for my gun, I remember that I don’t have it because the venue made everyone walk through metal detectors.

Screams echo through the space as everyone else ducks for cover too, and at first I think this is a robbery. There are plenty of high value items on display tonight. It’s the perfect kind of loot.

But then four more gunmen join the first two and start sweeping the room. They aren’t smashing cases or taking the valuables. They’re looking for someone. I have a bad feeling that it might be me they want.

When one man glances our way, I read the satisfaction in his eyes. He’s found me.

I don’t recognize him. Boris must be working with men from another part of the city, or even out of state.

The guy turns his head to speak to one of his comrades in Russian, and I strike.

Bouncing to my feet, I punch him and he drops like a ton of bricks. He’s out cold. His gun leaves his grip, skidding across the floor.

People all around shriek, and I catch quick movement out of the corner of my eye. Roman and Blake are wrestling one gunman to the ground. Across the room, the fucking Bane brothers are taking down three more. I guess they are somewhat useful.

The last shooter standing is making a beeline for me.

I reach for Arianna, my grasp coming away empty. I glance down. She’s gone.

Where the fuck did she go?

An audible click sounds from behind me. I spin around, coming face to face with the barrel of the handgun she’s holding. Pointed at my chest.

Malice flickers through her beautiful hazel eyes. I swallow hard. This is the moment she’s been waiting for, biding her time until she can off me and escape. This is her chance at freedom.

And from the look in her eyes, she’s going to take it.

Fuck.

I didn’t see this coming. I should have. All the signs were there, but deep down I didn’t think she’d actually do it.

Her finger presses on the trigger. Our gazes lock, my jaw sets, and I silently dare her to do it. See this through to the end.

Fucking shoot me already.

Releasing my breath through my nose, I give in to my fate. Murdered by my own wife, by the woman who I’ve been obsessed with for longer than she’ll ever know. I had one taste of her and it wasn’t enough. Not by far.

Her gaze flits over my shoulder. She takes aim and shoots.

A heavy thud sounds from behind me, and I look down to see the sixth gunman’s skull blown to pieces. His blood seeps toward my shoes.

“We should go.” Arianna’s calm voice captures my attention.

Our gazes clash. I’m sure she sees the surprise in mine.

I’m alive. I can’t fucking believe it.

She hands the gun to me, and I sweep her up in my embrace, hustling us toward the exit. Roman, Blake, and Sophia appear at our side, and together we leave the scene.

Blake, a gun in his hands, walks ahead of us, making sure our way is clear to the hotel’s side door off the ballroom hallway. We push open the doors, exiting to a brisk autumn evening, sirens wailing in the distance.

Maks is there for us. Arianna and I pile into the limo, just as Blake ushers Roman and Sophia into a waiting SUV.
