My chin falls to my chest as I suddenly feel dizzy and nauseated. How long has it been since I ate? Or drank water?

Konstantin continues, “I sold you because I had no other option to pay off my debts. But that wasn’t enough for those greedy bastards, so I had to fake my own death. Of course that is all ancient history. Those fuckers are gone. Now I own everything they once had. No one ever crosses a Kozlov and lives. But I digress.” He settles back in his chair. “I was going to come for you as soon as I had the situation under control but my brother took you to America to live with him. He was unreasonable and wouldn’t let me have you back. Vadim stole you from me. I waited years, but finally he had to pay the price.”

Uncle Vadim knew my father was alive all this time? Why didn’t he ever tell me?

“You killed my uncle?” I summon enough strength to lift my head.

Konstantin nods. “I did. He was never meant to be the Kozlov Bratva’s Pakhan anyway. I was in charge before I left America and came back to our Motherland. But I only planned to be here temporarily.”

Konstantin murdered his own brother, my uncle. Left to my own devices, I never would have found Uncle Vadim’s killer. He’s a ghost.

Now that my father has admitted to his crime I have someone to focus my rage on. The man who deserves it.

“Do you know why I came to Moscow all those years ago?” he asks, and I shake my head, silently plotting. “I came here to find a Russian woman. Not any Russian woman, but one from the old royal bloodlines. DNA tests make that so much easier these days. I found a woman of the right bloodline to give birth to my heir.”

I stare at him. He’s insane. Russian royal bloodlines? What the fuck is he talking about?

“There were actually two sisters that I could choose from. The older one had already spread her legs for a man so I took her younger virgin sister. She was delicious. Barely fifteen. You should have heard the way she screamed for me.”

I cringe away from him. Sick fuck.

“You told me my mother was a prostitute.” As much as I hate listening to him, I need to know more about my past, about my mother. The woman I don’t remember at all.

“She was,” he says. “All I needed from her was you. A son. My heir. After that I pimped her out to my men. She brought me good money while she lasted.”

I charge at him, forgetting that I’m chained to this fucking chair. All he does is laugh as I struggle against the restraints.

“You’ve grown into such an impressive young man. Look at you. So strong and full of life.” He crosses his arms, studying me while I seethe at him. This fucker is going to die. “Now it’s your turn to carry on our family line, Dimitri. I’ve brought you here to marry a Russian woman with the right bloodline. I’m even giving you a choice between several. All virgins.”

“I’m already married.” I stop struggling against the chains. I need to conserve my energy if I hope to kill this man and get the fuck out of here and home to my wife. She must be worried sick by now. And Maks, what happened to Maks? I hope he’s alive.

A sly grin appears on Konstantin’s face. “You’ll be divorced soon. It turns out your soon to be ex-wife was quite vocal about wanting to divorce you. So I wrote a little note and left the divorce papers for her to sign.”

A shiver of pure dread rushes through me. He left her a note? Saying what?

And the papers. Will she sign them?

Fuck, I wish I could talk to her right now. She hasn’t told me she loves me, but I think she does. I’ve been open about my feelings for her. She must know that I’d never give her those papers.

Doubt gnaws at my insides. Does she love me enough to stay or is her freedom more important to her than I am?

Konstantin pulls out his phone and glances at the screen. “Ah, just in time. The divorce was pushed through this morning. Expedited.” He pins me with his green gaze. “Congratulations, you’re a free man.”

I’m gutted. I can’t breathe.

If those papers went through this quickly, that means she didn’t even hesitate before signing them.

I have my answer. She doesn’t love me at all.

CHAPTER 39

Arianna

All of us spent the night in the mansion. Sophia stays with me, while Roman and Blake each take a guest room. I let them borrow some of Dimitri’s clothes—which he left in the closet along with all of his personal items. But I guess when you’re rich you can afford to replace it all.

It’s like he just up and left.

Then why did he text me that he was on his way to Leonidas last night? Why lure me along then dump me so abruptly? These questions and others have been whirling in my head all night and into the morning.
