I swear my showing up on his doorstep has nothing to do with not being able to get him out of my brain, with the way I can still feel his fingers inside me or wanting to properly explore that hard length I had my hands wrapped around.

Seeing the smile slip off of his handsome face when I bring up my grandmother and her friends makes me want to come clean with my ulterior motives. I liked it better when he was looking at me like he was excited to see me.

I want Justice Hawkins to be excited to see me.

He steps aside and holds the door open wider, gesturing for me to come in.

"What do you mean?" He sighs heavily and leads me past a formal living room into a large kitchen.

"You want something to drink?" He asks, reaching into the fridge and holding out a can of soda, "I'd offer you a beer but--"

"But you're not my dad or my husband, so that would be illegal even though we're on private property and highly unlikely to get busted by the cops. Right?"

I take the soda, totally noticing the way he looks at me when I sayhusband. His nostrils flare and he jaw ticks, but he just rolls his eyes and shuts the fridge.

Three more months till I'm twenty-one but this is the hill the man wants to die on. Even though we both know the jig is up on his whole good boy routine.

"So, answer the question," I pop the soda open and hand it back to him so he can pour it into the cup he's just filled with ice. "How is it that Mable Hart hit my grandmother in the face with a book and didn't get arrested for assault today?"

Hawk runs his hand through his hair, messing it up even more and making it even harder to look at him without thinking about ways I want to be the one messing it up.

"Marcia never said anything about getting hit with a book. She told me she hit her face on the side of the table when she fell."

"Mesa said Abu stabbed Vera with a toothpick, why didn't you arrest Abu?"

"Vera said it was an accident."

"You believed them?"

He turns to lean back against the counter, sipping beer from the bottle before answering with a short laugh.

"Hell no, I don't believe them. Your grandmother and her friends are insane. I don't even know why they were all together at Howard's place. It seems like a pretty obvious recipe for disaster to get all four of them in the same place at the same time, but there's nothing I can do if they all stick up for one another."

"They were playing Never Have I Ever," I tell him.

"What's that?"

"The drinking game? Like, someone says something they haven't done and anyone who has done it has to take a shot."

Hawk's mouth twitches under that sexy beard and he scrubs his hand down his face before looking up at the ceiling.

"Alice wasblitzed."

He laughs as he considers the implications and my chest squeezes at the sight.

Getting used to sexy Hawk is one thing, admitting there might be more to my feelings than that is something else.

"I've got a movie queued up on the TV upstairs. Wanna watch it with me?"

"You didn't answer my question."

"I'll make popcorn."

"Cane's been tryingto pull the permit to put a pond on that spot for a year," I explain while I watch the microwave countdown. "But the county keeps stalling. This way, there's a citation that means the county has thirty days to issue a permit retroactively."
