I hear that deep voice and press my thighs together. Not because his voice suddenly makes me go all sticky between my legs, mind you! It's just me tensing up because I'm so mad at him.

Right. I remember now. I'm pissed at the man looming over me in that ugly, beige uniform, with that dumb hat pulled low over his forehead while he watches me ignore him with his espresso in one hand and a croissant that April had savedjust for himin the other.

"Morning, Terra."

My thighs tighten under the small table...because I'm mad, not because I suddenly can'tnotnotice that his voice is dark and rough with a touch of amusement in it that makes me want to hear him read all my favorite books to me-- especially the dirty parts.

"Mind if I sit with you?"

It takes a lot of effort to shrug this nonchalantly without looking up from my book.

The chair opposite me scrapes against the flooring and creaks slightly under his weight, reminding me he's a pretty big guy.

Thoughts of how easily he could hold me down and make me beg are suddenly all up in my head, totally unwelcome, making my thighs press harder together while my pussy clenches.

It's the book, I tell myself. This one's even smuttier than the last one and I've been on a dark romance binge lately.

Obviously, I can't keep reading while he's watching me. It's...weird.

I try to tell myself it's creepy, but that's not it. It's something else entirely and I don't like it.

"I read that book." Hawk says conversationally as he leans over the small table between us. That hint of amusement is still there, but it's over-ridden by something else. Something darker that sounds conspiratorial.

A shiver runs along my spine and settles between my legs where I'm already in denial of the heat that's building.

Then I realize what book he's referring to-- the one I had with me when he was out at the homestead.

Oh.Thatbook. That is not the sort of book our prissy, uptight deputy should read.

Now it's my turn to be mildly amused, thinking of the lawman sitting across from me in his perfectly pressed uniform and how uncomfortable he must have been reading one of my filthy dark romance books.

Did it shock him, I wonder. Was he disgusted? Did it turn him on?

Now I'm just plain uncomfortable, squirming in my chair to relieve the pressure building between my legs while I envision the man sitting across from me with that book in one hand and his dick in the other.

Nope! Not going there. This is the guy who actually asked for permission to ask me out, remember? This is the sheriff's deputy. The guy who walks two blocks out of his way to use the crosswalk. The only crosswalk in Moonshine Ridge. The one that literally is only painted on the road because our main street is, technically, a state highway and it's required to have a crosswalk where it runs through town.

I never even noticed wehada crosswalk until I saw Hawkins going out of his way to use it.

This man doesn't have a rebellious bone in his body. He literally gave Cody Fell a citation for selling firewood without a business license two seasons ago.

Deputy Hawkins has probably never even considered using his handcuffs for any non-regulation purpose.

"How'd you like it?" I finally look up at him and give him my best innocent smile, knowing damn well there's no way he read the whole thing. He seems like the kind of guy who would have to take a shower and go to confession for even knowing that level of smut exists.

Proving my point, he blushes. A deep shade of pink colors his face all the way into the beard that has grown in thicker and longer in just the few days since I last saw him.

"Well, I read the book before it in the series," he mutters, eyes on his cooling coffee. "And then I read the two books after it."

My hand falls off the book I'm reading currently, allowing all the pages to fan shut and lose my place, since I refuse to break the spines on my paperbacks.

I look up at him and stare in open surprise.

"Wow, that's two more books than I made it through," I confess. I mean, the smut was hot, but the story was all over the place and it kinda stopped making sense halfway through book two.

He clears his throat and sips his coffee.

"I guess I just wanted to see how it was going to work out for them in the end," he admits.
