CHAPTER NINE

Casper kept his gaze on the woman he easily recognized as Martyna Morozova, shaking his head as he spoke softly to Persy. “I can’t believe you broke the first rule of protection and brought the person you’re protecting to your own apartment.”

“I didn’t know where else to take her,” she defended.

“Anywhere but here, I would have thought,” he grated.

“In view of Morozov’s reach and power I felt my options were limited,” she snapped.

“Okay.”

She winced at the obvious lack of conviction in his tone. “Do your brothers and cousin know?”

“Not yet, no.”

“But you do intend telling them?”

“Eventually, yes.” He turned to Martyna. “I’m afraid I’ll only be able to raise one of my hands.” He indicated the sling on his right arm as he stepped inside the apartment and closed the door behind him before raising his left hand. Inwardly, he was hoping that shutting the door would ensure no one else living on this floor would be put at risk.

The pictures Casper had seen of Martyna Morozova hadn’t prepared him for how stunningly beautiful she was in the flesh.

Her hair was a tumble of golden curls.

Her skin was smooth and creamy.

Her eyes were a deep green surrounded by thick lashes.

She had high cheekbones and a soft bow of a mouth on a face of perfect symmetrical and stunning beauty.

She was tall, her figure slightly more curvaceous than was fashionable, in fitted black trousers and a sweater the same color as her eyes. But those curves added to rather than detracted from Martyna’s overall sexy appearance.

That being said, it was a beauty and appearance which didn’t appeal to Casper as much as Persy’s more natural beauty did.

As it currently was.

His cock had been half hard with the anticipation of seeing Persy again as he ascended the stairs to her apartment on the third floor of the building. It had given a happy throb the moment he’d set eyes on her again.

None of which detracted from the fact he could now see the whites of Martyna Morozova’s eyes. Much like those of a wild animal that finds itself cornered and is getting ready to strike.

Not a good thing when Martyna was also holding what Casper had to assume was a loaded gun pointed directly at himself and Persy.

“You lied to me,” she now accused Persy.

“No—”

“Keep your hands up where I can see them,” Martyna snapped as Persy’s arms began to lower. “And there’s no point in attempting to deny it, because I heard you. You work for the company my husband has employed to find me and take me back to him.” Tears glistened in her accusing eyes and on her pale gold lashes.

“No—”

“Yes!”

Casper had continued to keep his arm up beside his head, in full sight. Martyna was too volatile right now to risk her shaking finger putting any more pressure on the trigger of the gun she was holding. “Can we all just calm down and discuss this situation like rational human beings?” Not that he thought he or Persy were in the least uncalm or irrational, but he didn’t want to antagonize the situation by implying Martyna was the only one who was.

“You work for my husband too,” Martyna accused.

“That—”

“I told you, I heard you!” Her cheeks were flushed as she waved the gun around. “You both work for Vadim, and now you’re going to take me back to him.”
