Mike was devastated that his sister’s behavior had almost resulted in Casper’s death.

The security footage from last night had proved that beyond a doubt.

It showed someone dressed in black using cutters to break the security lock attached to the huge garage door before opening it and entering.

Mike was sure the cutting of the lock had only been done in an effort to make it look more like a random break-in because Rachel had her own set of keys to the workshop.

The hood of the dark top the person was wearing was pulled up to cover their face and hair. Unfortunately, for Rachel, that hoodie had slipped back slightly as she began her frenzied slashing of the Jaguar’s leather seats with a knife. The slip had revealed part of Rachel’s face and her distinctive blonde curls.

She turned her glittering blue eyes on Persy. “Casper is mine. Mine, do you hear!” She launched herself at Persy, her hands raised and her fingers bent, the nails looking like claws.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Persy gave Casper another concerned glance as he got in beside her in the passenger seat of the black SUV. He hadn’t spoken a word since Rachel’s attack on her.

He released a heavy sigh. “I never did a single thing to encourage her delusion of the two of us being together.”

Persy didn’t doubt that for a moment. The exchanges she’d witnessed between Casper and Rachel had shown he felt a distinct brotherly affection for her, but not a romantic one. It was obvious Rachel was the one who had decided otherwise. A love that had boiled over into hate toward Persy after Casper had stated he was in love with her.

Persy was still a little in awe at how easily Casper had told Mike and Rachel he was in love with her. After last night, she could inwardly admit to having deep feelings for him too, but she wasn’t about to put the label love on those feelings just yet.

She’d half been expecting Rachel’s physical attack on her and had easily prevented her being able to do any damage by gripping the other woman’s wrists and then twisting both her arms behind her back to immobilize her. It hadn’t stopped Rachel from swearing and cursing at all of them, but most especially at Persy for having “stolen” Casper from her.

Mike had called his parents. They had arrived a few minutes later. The three of them had quickly decided the now-subdued Rachel needed a few weeks “respite” at the sanitorium she apparently occasionally went to when everyday life became too much for her.

Persy’s heart ached for Rachel, her parents, and for poor Mike.

It ached for Casper too, because he still seemed slightly shell-shocked at having learned it had been Rachel, the sister of one of his closest friends, who had deliberately been damaging his car in order to gain his attention.

Persey reached out to squeeze the hand Casper had resting on his jean-clad thigh. “That sort of obsession only exists inside the head of the person who is obsessed. It doesn’t need any encouragement.”

Casper turned his hand palm up so that his fingers now gripped hers. “You already knew, didn’t you?”

She grimaced. “Only for a short time. I became convinced of it while Mike was talking to you in his office. Her behavior toward me then was distinctly…off. Too focused on my relationship with you. In a less-than-polite way, considering Rachel had only met me for the first time yesterday.”

Casper attempted a grin. “Are you saying it usually takes more than one meeting for people to be less than polite to you?”

“Hah de hah hah,” she said dryly, freeing her hand to place it back on the steering wheel. “But I’m really sorry about Rachel,” she added softly.

“I’m sorry for Mike more than her. As long as she gets the help she needs, I’ll get over it, I’m not sure Mike is ever going to stop apologizing.”

“You won’t be pressing charges?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Fair enough.” That’s exactly what Persy had thought his answer was going to be. “But her confession does mean you’re no longer in need of a bodyguard.” She pointed out the elephant in the room now they knew Rachel Somers was the one who had put his life in danger and that the situation was being dealt with by her family.

Casper glanced at her. “You aren’t getting away from me that easily.”

“I wasn’t—”

“Yes, you were,” he contradicted. “But we still have other unresolved issues to work on together.”

Persy winced. “Martyna’s whereabouts.”

“Talking of which…” Casper sat up higher in the seat. “I need to call off the family regarding their search for whoever attacked my car, but could you please drive us to your apartment building while I make that call?”

She frowned. “No need when I’ll be going back there after I pick up my stuff from the estate.”
