“So that I can investigate and hopefully rule them out as a possible threat to you.”

He gave her a sideways glance. “You think I didn’t already do that myself after I was discharged from hospital?”

“I’m sure you did.” She knew it was his role to carry out background checks for new employees. He also provided all forms of high-tech security that might become necessary for the people working for Kingston Security to carry out their jobs successfully. “But my own investigations into the incidents won’t be influenced by any…unnecessary emotions.”

Casper scowled darkly. “You’re really starting to irritate me.”

She chuckled softly. “That just tells me I’m doing my job properly!”

He sighed heavily. “I’ll write down the names and addresses of any of my…involvements during the past three months since the attacks on my car began, once we reach the estate.”

She arched her brows. “Wow, there’s been so many that you need to write them all down?” She couldn’t remember the last time she’d been out on a date, and it would take her only a minute or two to list her whole dating history if she needed to.

“I’m going to write them down for your convenience, not mine,” Casper answered Persy’s obviously speculative comment about his personal life.

He was an unmarried man, aged in his mid-thirties, and with a healthy sex drive. It was no one else’s business how many people, or who, he’d slept with in the past few months.

Casper didn’t do relationships. To the degree he almost never slept with the same person twice. This tended to cause…resentment from some of those people, even though he had informed them from the onset that a night or two of pleasure was all he had to give.

He was also bi, which some people didn’t like or approve of. Not that he gave a damn what they thought when he was always honest about his preferences from the onset of any sexual involvement. He either liked or disliked a person based on their personality, not their sexuality.

At least, he hadn’t had any relationships before meeting Persy.

Now that he’d met her and recognized the irresistible pull he felt toward her, he was no longer as sure of what he did or was.

One thing he was certain of was that he couldn’t take his eyes off her.

She moved with a smooth and predatory grace, with a slow roll of her slender hips, which Casper found it impossible to look away from.

As far as he could tell, Persy wasn’t wearing any makeup, but her complexion was absolutely flawless, her brow and cheeks smooth, and her eyes that clear gold. There were also those soft and pillowy lips. Plus, she smelled delicious in the confines of the SUV. A mix of citrus and cinnamon, along with a womanly musk Casper instinctively knew was unique to her. It was a combination of heady and feminine perfumes that invaded and captured all his senses.

The cotton shirt she wore beneath her jacket had only one button unfastened at the throat, but it was enough to reveal the smooth and creamy skin of the top of her breasts. Casper’s mouth watered just imagining how much he would enjoy feasting on those delicious breasts.

Dear God, maybe, like the rest of the men in his family, Casper wasn’t going to have a choice in whether or not he fell in love, with Persy Jones as the focus of that emotion.

Just as he had no way of knowing whether that feeling would be reciprocated. Especially when, so far, he hadn’t shown himself to her in a particularly good light.

“Talking of my car… The police have now finished examining it, and it’s been released from evidence.” He glanced at his wristwatch. “By now, it should have been delivered to the garage where my guy always fixes and carries out the service on my cars. If you could turn left at the next set of traffic lights?”

Persy glanced at him. “I’ll need the full address to give to Jeff so that he knows where to follow us if we should get separated in traffic.”

Casper recited the address of Mike’s workshop, then fell silent while she made a call to the man in the vehicle following them.

“You said the police have already finished examining it and released it from evidence?” Persy inquired skeptically once her call had ended.

Casper shrugged. “I might have slipped into their security system and helped to speed up the paperwork, which facilitated that release.”

“Of course you might,” she drawled. “Now that we don’t have an audience, perhaps you would also like to share with me any other…unusual incidents that might have occurred during the last few months?” Persy prompted in a mild voice. “Incidents which you perhaps also decided not to share with the rest of your family?”

His mouth tightened. “What the hell makes you think there have been any other ‘incidents’ I haven’t told my family about?”

She shrugged. “You seem the type who likes to keep secrets.”

“The type?”

“Yes.”
