Mark laughed as the two ran around, patting the bench next to him when Thomas looked from the running boys to him. “Don’t worry about it,” he assured him. “They do this shit all the time. Friendly rivalry between sports.” He grinned as Thomas sat down. “He’s been dying to make jokes about Danny pining after you ever since we started figuring it out but he said it would be a jinx to mention it out loud. Particularly with how hard he was trying to get you alone.”
“I don’t think that’s a-” Thomas started then pause. “Hang on, what? Danny was doing what now?”
Mark’s smile grew and he shook his head. “Did he not tell you?” He glanced towards the field as Thomas shook his head. “Hm… Kevin might say this breaks a bro code or something but you are my friend too and I’ve known you longer even if we haven’t hung out before so…” He paused then looked at Thomas again. “Kevin and I think Danny’s had a crush on you practically since he first saw you. “I… I guess I just thought that the two of them worked it out that all three of you only had your phones for that hour every night,” Thomas admitted, frowning as he reconsidered their video calls over the break. “Honestly, the whole punishment didn’t make a lot of sense to me.”
Mark shrugged. “It was certainly a new one for us too. But we’d never been grounded that hard and long or fucked up that bad. But I can’t really blame Marcus. I don’t think I’ve seen him look that scared since-” He broke off, his throat constricting.
Thomas touched his arm without thinking. Kevin and Mark had both lost their parents and been placed in Marcus’s custody a few years back.
