“Finishing math homework,” Thomas answered, glancing over the assignment. “What about you?”

“We just finished eating dinner,” he said. “I- um-”

Thomas’s eyebrow rose as Danny hesitated again. “Something on your mind?”

“I was just-” Danny started then broke off again, letting out a frustrated sigh. “Are you doing anything tomorrow?”

“Nothing in particular,” Thomas said, sitting back in his chair and looking over the newly sanded surface of his desk. Kevin had really done a good job on it. Last weekend, they had all hung out at Thomas’s place and the next day Kevin returned with some power tools saying he needed to get the gouges out of the surface. “I think Kevin mentioned wanting to come by to stain my desk but he needed to ask Marcus about… seal? Something to protect the wood better. He said he’d call me to see where I’m at. What’s up?”

“I… I was just wondering if you wanted to go get some breakfast and hang out,” he said, swallowing again. “Baseball season is coming up fast and I won’t have many Saturdays free so… gotta spend the time wisely, ya know? And what better way than with my boyfriend?”

A laugh escaped Thomas, the tightness in his chest loosening. “We can do that. Do you want to meet me here or-”

“I’ll meet you out front,” he said immediately. “Like-” He broke off and Thomas wondered if he realized that he hadn’t actually been meeting Thomas at the door. “I’ll meet you out front,” he repeated. “We’ll have a great day. I promise.”

“I believe you, Danny,” Thomas chuckled at him. “Text me when you are almost here.”

“Deal!” There was a pause. “I- I love you, Thomas.”

Thomas, who had been about to hang up the call froze, simultaneously feeling hot and cold. His heart fluttered in his chest. “I-I-I,” he stammered. “Fuck.” He took a deep breath, trying to get the block out as his face grew hotter. “I l-love you, too.”

Danny laughed- no, giggled on the other end at him. “I’ll see you in the morning, babe,” he said, the tightness gone from his voice at last. “Don’t stay up too late.”

“I have an app for that now,” Thomas said, feeling himself smile. “Good night, Danny.”

“Good night, Thomas.”

Summer Vacation

“-and you message us right after you land,” Ceri said, kissing Thomas’s cheek. “And when you get to the hotel!” Another kiss on his other cheek. “And before you go to bed.”

“Cici, we only have so many minutes,” Jessi reminded her, pulling her wife off of Thomas gently. “He doesn’t have to text us every time he moves.” Taking Ceri’s place she pulled his head down to kiss Thomas’s forehead. “But do those first two, baby, and remember we might not be reachable so if anything happens-”

“Marcus, Sean, Issac, Seong, O’Hare, in that order,” Thomas recited, smiling as he hugged them both. “I remember. Now go or you’re going to miss your own flights!”

“Take lots of pictures,” Ceri said, stealing one last kiss on Thomas’s cheek. “Remember that your phone and watch are completely waterproof so-”

“I know,” Thomas laughed, pushing her toward the hall that would lead to their gate. “Now go! Shoo! Enjoy being alone again before I interrupt you with laundry every week!”

“We love you,” Jessi said, also stealing another kiss but taking Ceri’s hand to drag her away. “We’ll see you next week! Bye boys!”

“Bye,” the chorus of voices called after them. Ceri and Jessi continued to blow kisses at them until the crowd swallowed them.

“Are they gonna make it a week without you,” Kevin asked, still laughing as Danny rubbed at the lipstick marks on Thomas’s cheek. “I’d hate to see how they react next year if you decide to go out of state to join one of us.”

“Hey, we agreed on no college talk for the next seven days,” Mark reminded him, elbowing Kevin in the ribs as they started for their own gate.

“I’m just glad Marcus and Sean had to stay behind the security gate,” Danny said, his hand slipping into Thomas’s as they walked. “Can you imagine how they’d have played up their goodbyes after that PDA?”

“Says the fucking king of PDA,” Kevin laughed. “Honestly, you two can’t keep your hands to yourselves.”

“We can so,” Danny said, waving a hand.

“Danny, I love you but no we can’t,” Thomas said, smirking at him. “And unfortunately, you are not subtle enough for our best friends to not notice it.”

“I’m subtle,” Danny protested, pouting at Thomas.

“No, you really aren’t,” Mark replied.
