When she looks at me, I smile. That’s all I want to do every time her eyes meet mine.

“You ready to go?”

It takes her a minute to understand what I’m saying, but I see the heat blazing in her eyes when she nods.

We both hop off the bed of the truck and hustle to climb inside the cab.

“See you in the morning, Boyd!” someone calls out to me as I’m scrambling to get my key into the ignition.

The sound of my engine muffles a few laughs coming from the group of guys who I know are just some old friends trying to give me a hard time.

But that lustful energy bubbling up inside of me starts to simmer and cool as we drive back to Ruby’s guesthouse.

It only takes us about ten minutes to get back to the other side of the lake, the late hour making the single-lane drive a breeze, but it’s more than enough time for my mindset to shift.

Ruby spends the ride with one foot up on the dash and the window down, looking out at where the moonlight reflects off the lake, a smile on her face.

God, she’s beautiful.

As we pull up in front of Ken’s, I park and turn off the engine, wondering what I should say to communicate to her the thoughts on my mind.

Before I have a chance to say anything, she’s sliding across the bench seat and straddling me where I sit.

Her warm body presses against mine and her lips follow, sucking the breath straight out of my lungs. It’s everything I could imagine, her curves soft beneath my hands as I grip her hips and lick deeper into her mouth.

Ruby is the sexiest woman I’ve ever had the pleasure of having in my arms, and as she shifts her hips and grinds against me, I worry I’m going to embarrass myself by coming in my jeans right here.

Her fingers are in my hair, the slight scratch against my scalp making me groan as shivers ripple beneath my skin.

“Boyd,” she whispers, biting my lip just a little bit, “do you want to come inside?”

I want to—badly. I seriously consider it as her mouth drops to suck at the skin on my neck, her hips shifting back and forth in maddening little circles that have me wanting to crawl out of my skin.

But I hear the call-out from the bonfire again. I know people will see Hank parked outside the guesthouse. Some sort of sleazy hookup on the mouths of Cedar Point residents isn’t what I want to happen between the two of us.

So, as much as I know I’m going to regret this later as I lie in bed with a massive hard-on and a wish that I was wrapped around Ruby’s body in her bed, I say the thing I know I should say instead of what I want to say.

“I wish I could, but I have to get up early to pick up Busy from the airport tomorrow morning.”

Ruby pulls back slightly, confusion marking her eyes with something that looks markedly like rejection.

“Can I take a raincheck for another night?” I ask, hoping that by mentioning another evening together, she doesn’t feel like I’ve shut her down completely.

I watch as she swallows and then shifts off of me with a smile that doesn’t look entirely sincere.

“Sure.”

“I really do wish I could come in,” I tell her. “But there’s no rush, right?”

She nods then opens her door and slides out. I follow, making sure to take her hand in mine as we walk the little path down to the guesthouse.

She unlocks the door and then pauses. “I didn’t upset you with what I said earlier?” she asks, her eyes flitting up to mine. “To Corinne?”

Barking out a laugh, I shake my head. “Not in the slightest. I thought that was…brilliant, actually. It’s why I needed to kiss you so bad once she finally walked away.”

Ruby’s expression eases slightly, but I can still tell she’s a little confused by my heat earlier and the shutdown now that I’ve brought her home.

My mother told me once that women are conditioned to believe men only want one thing from them, so it makes sense that my refusal of Ruby’s offer tonight would make her feel less certain of my interest.
