I can’t pinpoint why, exactly, I feel comfortable talking to Ruby. All I know is that I do, and I want her to know it.

“Maybe it doesn’t seem like it, but I’ve shared a lot more with you than I do with other people—with anyone, for a long time.”

“Really?” she asks, and when I look her way, I see she’s watching me with a laser focus.

“Something about you, Ruby…” My voice fades as I try to put it into words for her. “You make me want to share. To talk. About anything.”

She blushes and looks away, but I still see the smile on her face and love that I’m the one who put it there.

Her hand slips back into mine, and we keep floating in silence, just enjoying each other’s company as we get closer and closer to Ken’s property.

A few minutes later we’re both trudging out of the water and toward the house, our shoes making slurpy, squelching noises as we walk up the banks of the lake and across the grass.

Once we get to the deck, she grabs towels from the outdoor cabinet stocked with summer lake supplies and hands me one, each of us taking a moment to dry off most of the way.

Ruby toes off her sandals then wraps the towel around her hair for a minute to get it dry before draping it around her shoulders and tugging it in tight over her arms. She looks so snug, and it makes me want to kiss her.

So I do.

I startle her at first when I step so close, my towel left in a heap on one of the Adirondack chairs. But when she sees me looking at her mouth, my head dipping closer to hers, she tilts her head slightly and closes her eyes, encouragement emanating from every single cell of her body.

It makes me smile, enjoying how quickly she’s wanting to give in to me, to this thing between us.

Taking her face in my hands, I kiss her gently on the forehead. Then once on each eyelid. Each of her temples, her cheekbones, her nose.

I can feel her twitching, her body beginning to fidget with each moment I let pass where I’m not kissing her lips.

Finally, when I can’t bear it any longer and I don’t think Ruby can either, I lower my mouth to hers.

There’s nothing timid about the way she kisses me. Some sort of flip has switched inside of Ruby Rae Roberts, because she opens her mouth for me and tangles her tongue with mine without any kind of flirtation or preamble.

And damn does she taste good.

chapter fourteen

Ruby

God, I love the way he tastes.

My entire body trembles, both from the cold lake water and from the feeling of him wrapping his arms around me and holding me close.

I nip at his lip, suck on the soft flesh to soothe it, and then lick into his mouth again.

He’s like a drug.

One I will happily get addicted to.

Boyd slows our kiss down, pressing his forehead against mine, both of us breathing hard.

“You make it hard to resist you,” he says, his voice sending shivers down my spine, making me more wet than the lake water ever could have.

I bump his nose with mine. “What if I don’t want you to resist?” I ask.

Even in my relationship with Evan, when it was at its steamy beginning, I never craved him like I do my next breath. Just three days into knowing Boyd Mitchell, I feel more hooked on him than anything I’ve ever known.

“Come inside,” I whisper, tugging him with me to my door.

I’ll admit, there’s something a little bruising about having to push Boyd a bit before he seems fully on board with it, but that thought quickly flies away once we’re both inside the house.
