At that, Justin laughs, pushing his front door open and leading me inside. “Sure, old man.”

By the time I make it home a few hours later, I’m just as exhausted by the drive back as I was driving into town, and I collapse on the couch. After lying there for a few minutes, I dig my phone out of my pocket and call Gabi.

“If you’re calling for more phone sex, the answer is yes.”

I laugh. “Well, that is quite the hello.”

We were each in our own homes when the snow began to fall, so we were snowed in separately. Let me just say that watching Gabi strip for me over the phone was quite the experience and one I hope to repeat sometime in the future.

“But no, that’s not why I called. I’m pretty sure my family wouldn’t appreciate me talking dirty to you in the living room.”

“You would be correct!”

I take a deep breath in surprise, glancing over the couch and catching my sister’s retreating form as she heads into the kitchen.

“Was that Bellamy?”

I chuckle. “That was Bellamy.”

Gabi groans, but I can hear her smile through the phone when she speaks again. “How was coffee?”

“It was good. Ran into Coach G.”

“Really? How’s he doing? I feel like I haven’t seen him around lately.”

“He’s good. Still living over off Pineview, just doesn’t go into town much anymore.”

Gabi hums. “It was a good chat, though?”

“It was, yeah. It was good catching up. He told me I was his favorite player.”

She scoffs. “I bet he says that to everyone.”

“That’s what I said!”

We both laugh, and I settle back into the couch, loving the sound of her giggling into the phone.

“I stopped by Justin’s house on my way home.”

I can practically hear her eyebrows rising through the phone. “And how did that go?”

I tell her about our conversation, how he invited me in to play FIFA, meeting his mom. It was a surprisingly chill way to spend part of my day, and that tenseness that is always present in Justin was absent by the time I left.

“Sounds like you might be getting through to him?” she asks.

“Maybe,” I say, wondering the same thing myself.

We’re silent for a beat before I change direction, wanting to hear how things are on her end.

“How are things over at Casa de Ventura? How are things going with the plans for the new workshop?”

Gabi sighs. “I don’t know. Good, I guess.”

“That was the least convincing response I’ve ever heard.”

“Okay, well…it’s average. It’s fine. I think I’ve just been so excited that now it being a reality feels weird. Like I’m not sure what I actually want.”

I set my phone on my chest and switch it to speaker.
